It's Gonna Take More Than That

The governor of Georgia, Sonny Perdue, is praying for rain.

Georgia is going through one of their worst droughts in history and they could be out of drinking water in a handful of months, so the governor is holding a prayer service next week.

Oh, boy. God help them indeed!

    Re: marc
In a perfect world…yea we wouldn't have this problem but we do. We need to many things to make this problem better. Anyone or any business that is making things worse should be fined, but I can not do that. I can only do my part and hope it makes a difference. So, all I am saying is kicking your fellow man when they are down is only making our country worse and what we need is to pull together. So, thanks for changing the attitude a little. Do your part and I will do mine. Thats all I am saying.

I can't believe how awful you people are talking about God. He is a wonderful and loving Lord. I live in Georgia and it's cold, but it's really dry outside. One day I will be in heaven with Jesus and you people won't because you are not saved. Perez, you are an awful person and I will pray for you.

Re: wetcnt – that is just the point. You see it as majic or superstition when it really is not. As a matter of fact, as a Christian I am against superstitious beliefs. The grace of God and the Christianity has nothing to do with magic or superstition. You are misinformed, so your critique of my belief system is way off. But the point is, what harm would it do to pray, it wont hurt anyone will it, and it will help so why not?

While I understand her praying for rain, I don't think it's going to help in the long run. Winter is coming so rain will too at some point, and through the spring I'm sure. But the situation is going to be worst next year. That's just how it goes these days will climate change. Hell, I'm in a pretty cold ass part of Canada and we still ahven't seen snow. It November! And while I'm almost in Atlantic Canada and not that far north relativily in this country we usually have at least two snow-to-melt days by this point. I was in Capris yesterday and haven't touched my fall jacket yet. Sorry Georgia, I think it's only going to get worst each year after this. :(

yeah, i can't remember the last time in rained hard over here. at least in atlanta they're doing better with having a water source. a little over a month ago, i was told that we had 35 days of water left. then they routed water from a different source and now we have enough to last until about the end of the year or so. WE NEED RAIN!

    214

hey. i live in atlanta and i just want to say that it makes me sad at how ignorant some of you are. yes there is a drought (Whatever we'll get through it.) and yes it seems a bit ridiculous that our governer is praying for rain publically and that his name is sonny. but whatever. it is what it is. Oh and not everyone from georgia is a "hillbilly" or "Redneck."

    215

I live in Georgia and yes there is a drought, but it's not THAT bad. If it were that bad, wouldn't they restrict watering our lawns completely? We are still allowed to water 3 times a week. I see church signs all over praying for rain. That's the Bible Belt for ya!! We have a nice big pond in our backyard if anyone freaking out about this wants to have a drink :)

  16. M says – reply to this

    216

OK, I go to school at UGA. People who aren't actually experiencing the drought really have no room to talk– I feel like I'm not in America because it's to the point where we don't even flush our toilets every time we use them. Maybe if the states of Alabama and Florida weren't so incessant about using Lake Lanier as a water source to save their endangered fish/oysters, the metropolitan Atlanta area wouldn't be in as much of dire need of water as we are now. Look it up… I'm not kidding.

Prayer is having a chat with God, the creator of the world. He created the whole world and all that it is capable of doing, including the rain, so He is the one that can send the rain. Anyone at any time can chat with God, no matter who you are, God wants to hear from you. God does not wait to answer the prayer from a “perfect” person, because that idea does not exist. He is waiting to hear from those who have faith as small as a mustard seed( Luke 17:6),and those who are willing to call out for help( Isaiah 58:9 “Then you will call, and the Lord will answer: You will cry, and He will say, “Here I am”.”) There never comes a point in life when you are “too far away” to ever receive help and love from God.

    219

Pray for rain? Awsome. Theres no harm in that what- so -ever. I dont know how its going to help though. If you seriously think sitting on your asses and praying is going to help.. maybe that why you have limited water in the first place. I thinks its funny how you can pick up a fuckin 5th grade science book and figure out how rain is made…but yet it still seems to come from praying to"jesus." Maybe tonight ill pray to "jesus" to feed all the starving children living in poverty…or maybe if i pray hard enough he'll cure the aids virus in innocent new borns….or maybe if the PEOPLE did something about it it would work out better. "jesus" doesnt live here. we do.

For those of you who are blasting Gov. Perdue, shame on you! I grew up in Georgia. This drought is a very real, very serious tragedy for us. This is the worst drought our state has ever suffered. Family after family lost their farms due to the lack of rain; 85% of the peach crop was destroyed which translates into millions of dollars for our state. Whether it be dancing or praying for rain, we will do whatever it takes in order to pull through. Pray is a powerful thing. I applaude Gov. Perdue for standing up for his beliefs and not hiding behind being politically correct like so many of today's politicians do. We cannot live without water, and it's running out fast. Please keep our state in your thoughts and prayers. Have some respect!

Other than that, I live in GA and I think things will be fine. I live in a smaller city than Atlanta (where it's very populated and therfore people are buying all the water) but where I'm from I haven't heard anything on the news about my city specifically.

i've lived in atlanta for over 16 years (yankee transplant) and i have never seen anything like this here. it's really bad folks, and it is no joke, we will be out of water in about 3 months. there are some places nearby that are already out of water (for instance, orme, tn) and they only get water from 6-9 pm! that is the only time people can shower, wash clothes, dishes, etc. we may soon have restrictions that are similar… but man, when i saw that sonny is going to have a pray for rain party on the news tonight it made me embarrassed to live here.

Water is another issue entirely. It is generally government interference in what should be a market place that causes water usage/distribution problems. Western Water Rights is the most classic example of why the government will enevitably lead to disaster when they try to make it "fair".

I am a Christian and it took this article to open my eyes to what I have been exposing myself to. I am a Georgian and I think it’s great that our governor will literally be praying for rain. I will be praying with him! He is right, rain does come from a higher power, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the only God. On another note, your advertisements are really offensive and I know it’s a free country but this “free citizen” will not expose herself to this website any longer. Thanks….

why doesnt georgia enforce something like that? instead of telling you guys youre about to run out of water at the last minute?

i don't understand how some of you can be so mean and disrespectful. i've lived in georgia my entire life and we have had water restrictions every summer as long as i can remember, but never anything this critical. saying this is what we deserve for being rednecks or racist is way out of line. not all georgians are racist rednecks, although i will say i have seen my fair share or those sorts of people. but please dont lump us into one big category. while katrina and the wildfires out west were going on i didnt say "well thats what they get" i just simply said a prayer for everyone involved. if you don't believe in prayer, that is fine, but being a christian i do. also, because i am a christian i try my best not to judge others because thats how i was raised, and ask that you do the same. hopefully we get some rain, not just georgia, but alabama as well because they are in need also. oh, GO BULLDOGS!

    238

As someone from GA I can say the problem is not drinking water, we can buy bottled water, the real issue is water to shower and clean our clothes with. Sad thing is our water will deplete faster if damn churches, and yes I said that together, and businesses don't stop watering their lawns and such. Reclaimed or unfiltered just means, it could have been treated for us to drink and use, but instead we are wasting it first.

And to all you assholes out there saying we should help ourselves. Ok correct me if I'm wrong, are you saying we should have told Louisiana, Alabama, etc to help themselves when Katrina and shit hit? Cause it's the same thing a natural disaster, something we can't control. They got warnings to evacuate whether they could or not, we are told to ration our water whether everyone listens or not. California catches on fire and according to you fuckers who think we should help ourselves, no other state should give a fuck about it.

Do some of you people even think before you speak. Oh and btw it's not our governors fault we are losing our water. You want to blame someone, blame the next person you see washing their car, watering their lawn… you know the ones who think their car must sparkle, to hell with water conservation.

And FYI the residence of GA are not freaking out like those ppl you see on tv, but lord knows I will freak out if I continue to see those morons wasting water on things that are not a necessity.

We are having so many people from the north (USA) and also from other countries moving here that we are having a hard time having enough water for everyone when there is no rain. So we really don't need any more people moving here. Maybe some of them can move away. I well be praying for rain also.

    242

Re: rhiannon – Rhiannon they do warn us, ppl just don't listen. This is by FAR not a last minute warning, it is only last minute to those idiots who have been wasting the water. I drive to work every day and see signs everywhere saying water restrictions. For the past… month or so where I live outside watering is completely banned. Sadly this just brings out the more disrespectful ones who think claiming the water is not usable for drinking or bathing makes it alright to run their sprinklers non stop in the heat of the day. Almost all water is potable. Maybe not for drinking, but hell that is damn well water that could be used for laundry, toilets… etc.

Appreciate your concern and respect. Because obviously the only ppl that understand what's really happening are those who have had to deal with this often

I guess they're just going to wait until there's 3 days of water left to do something about it. Bush is going to make it a priority just like Hurricane Katrina. Lack of water in such a huge city could definitely cause violence & chaos. Oh & making fun of praying Christians isn't the way to fame Perez. In the Bible it says that if you let Him know what you want through prayer, your needs will be fullfilled. (& to the smartasses, no not like, "Dear God send me a million dollars.)

Australians are now having to look for water recycling and very harsh water restrictions. Drinking water can be brought in (bottles anyone?) but water for industries? farming? showering? Australians can only water plants once a week, for an hour at most. Its only a state… why don't the other states help out?

I live in Atlanta. Gov Perdue has asked for GA citizens to pray for rain several times in the past couple of months, this is not the first time. He is a Christian so he obviously beleives that it will make a difference. Prayer works. If you dont believe it then don't do it, what is it the big deal. (Christanity is not the only religion that places signifgance on prayer)
And contrary to what some say the drought in this area IS a big deal…no one is being dramatic, it is a fact that the Atlanta metro area is running out of water fast. The entire state of Georgia is not being affected in the same way.

It is ALWAYS easier to look at a situation you are not involved in and make judgements…

Just a few things. It is "if it's yellow, it's mellow - if it's brown flush it down". This has applied everywhere there has been a drought. ALSO a car wash is a good thing in a drought IF they use recycled water, which most of them do because it saves them money. To those who say there is nothing they can do about it because it is out of their control. NONSENSE. Every person in this country should be conserving water ALL THE TIME, drought or not. No state or person should wait until the last minute to conserve. Does The Dust Bowl ring a bell with any of you? It was the policies of the government and the farmers and developers that made the Dust Bowl so bad. They pulled out all the prarie grass which had anchored the soil for centuries with it's deep roots that had survived forever the various droughts and wind storms that will eventually happen. It is man's overproduction and overpopulation without planning that causes these problems. I live in California and knew about the drought in the Southeast. It in unbelievable that some people in Georgia didn't know about it!! Demand that everyone be educated and that changes are made to resolve this and then be prepared for all future droughts. Good Luck!

I'm from ATL, i've seen the pics of the lakes where we get our water from. BUT i think that our 3 month water supply we have left, is a lie and just a big publicity stunt to make us try and conserve water. But yea, lets pray for rain or just a LOT of effing snow.

TOO MANY PEOPLE LIVING HERE IN GEORGIA. All the people that are putting down the south and then they move here. We don't have enough water for everyone, especially during a drought. Some people might need to move back home.

I live in Georgia. And though we have no rain, and Lake Allatoona is completely dry and you can walk underneath Knox Bridge and never see water, my lawn, all the trees, and everything are still completely green. We never water our lawn, and I could give two shits less about washing my car. I think some places are just worse than others. Maybe he thinks praying for rain will help. I don't know. This is the man who is on Star 94 doing the "hot mom check in" everynight. It'll rain when the weather changes and we get rain. Until then just try and conserve I guess. I'm not very worried about it.

Why is is so hard to believe that prayer does work..? It's messed up that people are so open to any and every religion as long as it isn't Christianity. As soon as the Christian God is mentioned people become intolerant assholes. You liberals preach tolerance, but fail to live according to your own principles. If there were people doing some sort of rain dance (as typical in african cultures when going through droughts) the majority of you would probably endorse it and consider joining in as well.

I live in Atlanta, and it is not as bad as it seems. First, these numbers are based on how water is released from the reservoirs at Lanier. Technically, Alabama is the place with the real problem as water is released from Lanier to the Chattahoochee and supplies bama's smaller rivers and streams. Once Perdue gets the release numbers through the Army Corp of Engineers, we'll be fine. Bama is going to have to really conserve though.

I think I've lost IQ points by reading through most of these comments. If you a-holes think all Governor Perdue has done for us is hold a prayer vigil, you are dead wrong and completely ignorant. You guys have no idea what's going on in this state and what our leadership is doing to help us through this terrible drought. How about you get off the internet for a minute and go read a newspaper? Those of you who claim to live here and say "it's not that bad" need a fucking reality check. Take a trip to Lanier and Allatoona and then try to tell us it's not bad. Fuck. You guys suck.

Re: ho down – Because Lake Lanier is nothing more than a mud puddle now, idiot. Levels are down 15 feet below normal. Ever heard of a thing called google?

Regardless of religious affiliation — the drought in the South is a BIG freakin deal. If one person decides to take it to their higher God, why is that such a crime? I don't see Perdue enacting Legislation that forces ALL residents of GA to attend these prayer vigils. Geez, people. Can we not think outside of the box?

FYI - I'm FROM GA — however, I've spent the past 6 years living in Europe & currently live outside of NYC. Oh - and I'm Agnostic. Flame away.

Re: Katy – "If one person decides to take it to their higher God, why is that such a crime?"
Yes, if that person is the governor requesting it of the people as a government official. If the prayer service he holds is not very carefully phrased so that it is *not* specificially Christian, then he is violating the Constitutional requirement for separation of Church and State. He will have stepped on the rights of every single person who is not Christian and even in Georgia, that's a lot of people. I am tired of politicians (and citizens) who don't understand the document that defines us as a nation.

To all amongst you that have defamed or demeaned these peoples right to pray, I truly feel sorry for you…If someone started a post mocking out
'The Gays' or 'The Jews', and their opinions about something they believe in I could hear the wailing now: wahhhhwaaahhhhwaaahhhh.
Rosie would have her boxers all notted up on her blog, and Baba Walters would be doing a rant on "The View". It's funny but most non-believers sure do learn to pray when their sorry asses are on their death beds.
God Bless all you Georgian's and this NYC girl will be praying that it rains
buckets for y'all. Just as all of you prayed for us during 9-ll.

I live 5 minutes from Lake Lanier here in Northeast Georgia. They are about to close car washes and other like businesses. They don't want us to water lawns, flush, pressure wash, wash cars, and for us to use dishwater to flush toilets with. Boats are stuck in mud and the lake provides Atlanta's drinking water. North Georgia is in a crisis because we will run out in just a couple months. We let out a certain amount of water to send down the river over to Alabama and Florida to help preserve some habitat for some endangered mussels. We are approaching the driest months of the year and it would take weeks of non-stop rain to get our lake levels high enough to get through this.

Wow, people want to slam people for racism, but it is okay to stereotype on the basis of which region of the US we are from? I'm pretty fed up with this hypocrisy. I have lived here all of my life and it's soooo good to see "y'all" hating on us "stupid rednecks" so much. Maybe your ignorance will keep you away.
