Will Angie Lose Zahara?
The birth family of Angelina Jolie’s daughter wants her to bring Zahara home to Ethiopia
Angelina Jolie shares a special bond with her daughter Zahara, whom she adopted more than two years ago from Ethiopia. Malnourished and suffering from rickets, Zahara was days away from death when Angelina found her, bonded with her and nursed her back to health. Today, she cherishes time alone with her happy toddler, 2, and “chooses special stories” to read to her when they’re together, a pal says. But now a dark cloud of unhappiness hangs over their relationship. And Angelina’s worst nightmare may come true.
On June 20, 2006, Angelina proudly told CNN’s Anderson Cooper about the daughter she named Zahara. “She’s from Ethiopia. She’s an AIDS orphan,” Angelina said. But Zahara’s adoption papers, which an In Touch representative was shown on November 12, clearly states that Zahara has a grandmother and extended family alive in Africa— and the grandmother introduced In Touch to her daughter, who claims to be Zahara’s mother.
In 2005, the U.K.’s Sun also talked to the woman, who claimed to be Zahara’s birth mother. In the town of Awassa, 140 miles south of the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa, In Touch spoke with that woman again. She’s very much alive, she doesn’t have AIDS — and she’d love to be with the child who was taken away. “I want my daughter to come home to see where she is from,” the woman who says she’s Zahara’s mother, Mentewab Dawit Lebiso, 24, tells In Touch. “Her grandmother and I both tried very hard to raise her, and I want her to come home to regain her identity.”
Was Angelina lied to?
While her birth family may not be able to afford to challenge Zahara’s adoption, they do claim they were misled. They say a local official, who took Zahara to the adoption agency, told the family they would get to see the baby again and maintain contact with her. Most people hoping to adopt who are working with the U.S.- based agency Wide Horizons for Children (which Angelina used to adopt Zahara) visit the child’s village and surviving family members. But Angelina, 32, could not do so when she adopted Zahara more than two years ago. “There were a lot of journalists following her,” the agency’s Ethiopian head, Dr. Tsegaye Berhe, tells In Touch. “She was not able to travel as much as she would have liked or as we would have liked her to do.”
Still, after speaking to the agency, family members hoped Angelina and her partner, Brad Pitt, 43, would bring Zahara back for a visit. But that has not happened. “After they took the baby, they didn’t keep in contact. They didn’t tell us anything about her,” Zahara’s aunt, Zinash Haile Yenero, 20, tells In Touch. “My mother was very sad. At one point she was even thinking of trying to find a way to bring her grandchild back, but she has no money, so she can’t.”
Angelina, an insider says, has heard the published tales of Zahara’s African family, but feels on a deeper level that Zahara is part of her family. “She believes that Zahara is an orphan and the woman who claims to be her mom is mistaken,” says a friend. Government papers said Zahara was an AIDS orphan, says the pal, and “Angie had no reason to believe otherwise. Zahara was days away from death and Angelina saved that child. As far as she is concerned, that bonded her to that little girl forever.”
Because of her own stormy relationship with her father, Jon Voight, Angelina has strong feelings about parenthood. “She feels that while a person may have a biological parent who is still alive, that parent has to earn the right to be with their child,” the pal explains.
Zahara’s real story
Dr. Tsegaye says that Angelina has no obligation to keep in touch with Zahara’s blood family. “It’s up to the adoptive parents,” he says. “We cannot force them.” But Zahara’s grandmother, Almaz Elfneh, 45, insists that the circumstances behind their decision to put the baby in an orphanage must be told to Zahara and to her adoptive parents. “I miss my grandchild a lot,” she adds. According to Mentewab, Zahara was conceived when she was raped by a stranger who broke into her home. After the baby — whom she named Yemasrech, which means Good News — was born on January 7, 2005, she moved in with her mother and got a job as a laborer. But Mentewab became overwhelmed. “I thought the baby was going to die because there was no food, so I ran away,” she confesses.
Unable to care for her alone, Almaz says she brought the child to a local authority, explaining that her daughter had run away. Another man, who worked on behalf of WHFC, but was not an official employee, took the baby away and told the agency that her mother had died. “What he has done is equal to murder,” charges Mentewab. “He took my daughter away and he just disappeared with her. He said I was dead, but I heard from my mother that she never said that.” But Dr. Tsegaye disputes this account.
Despite their sad story, Angelina feels that she must put Zahara’s needs first, says an insider. “She believes that you protect your child and put them first,” says the pal. Another friend says that Angie thinks contact with Zahara’s birth family at such a young age would be too confusing. Others disagree. Adoption specialist Jerri Jenista says, “Most parents want their children to have some contact with where they came from.”
The choice, however, remains Angie’s until Zahara has grown and can choose for herself. Much as they’d love to see her, Mentewab and her family know they cannot force Angelina to bring Zahara home. They realize they could never give the child the happy, privileged life she shares with her new parents. Maybe one day, Zahara will enjoy the best of both worlds.
Angelina thought she had no mother
Angelina, who proudly introduced Zahara to her co-stars on the set of The Good Shepherd in August 2005, believes Zahara’s mother died.
They will adopt again
Despite the heartache involved with international adoptions, Angelina and Brad plan to have more children together, say friends, with at least one through adoption.

Mentewab never signed the papers giving up her daughter, which could give her a case for getting Zahara back — if she had the money to pursue it. “If some family member comes in and leaves the child at an orphanage and signs her over, and then the mother wants her back, you can make the argument that the person didn’t truly understand that their child is gone forever,” says adoption specialist Jerri Jenista.
Mentewab struggled to feed her family. “Sometimes all I had was a piece of bread all day,” she tells In Touch.

“I would tell other families not to give up their children,” says Zahara’s aunt Frehiwot, 18, with another aunt, Zinash Haile Yenero. “I would tell them what happened to us.”
Two neighbors, including Asegadech Asefaw, concurred that Mentewab had run away — not died.
Another neighbor, Bekelech Haile, accompanied Almaz to the government offices.
But the agency says Angelina adopted legally
Wide Horizons for Children claims it told Angelina that Zahara’s mother was dead because the documents that her real grandmother, Almaz Elfneh, and three witnesses signed said so. “We have to trust the documents we received from the local government,” says Dr. Tsegaye Berhe, who tells In Touch that Almaz is indeed the baby’s grandmother. “She’s signed a document saying, ‘My daughter had died and she left the child behind.’”
Madonna’s son also isn’t an orphan
Madonna has had trouble with a foreign adoption, too. Yohane Banda (right), the father of her son David, protested that he didn’t know he was giving up his son forever. Angelina also appeared critical of Madonna for taking a child from Malawi. “It’s a country where there is no real legal framework for adoption,” she told a French magazine. “Personally, I prefer to stay on the right side of the law.” But later, Angelina insisted she favored Madonna’s adoption. “I said many positive things that were omitted,” she said. “I encourage everyone to be supportive so that every child can adjust nicely to their new home.”
Should celebrities help children stay with their families?
The plight of Africans affected by AIDS and living in poverty has led other stars to lend financial support to communities without removing children from their homes and villages. For instance, in 2005, the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project was created by the Oscar-winning actress to fund mobile health clinics to serve the poorest and most rural areas of South Africa. Save the Children’s Tonya Nyagiro tells In Touch, “It’s more acceptable for most of these kids to remain in their villages among family and friends who do their best to care for and support them.”
I can't beleive nobody in this site will team with Zahara's biological family. Maybe because they are so poor and so black and so irrelevant, that they don't even have the right to speak. I don't think its such a big deal to ask for her to come back and see where her roots are. Given her adoptive parents though it may not be for a long while, when she is old enough to decide that for herself. As the mother of an Ethiopian child I am horrified by such blatant BS to sell a mag. An Ethiopian adoption when finalized is closed and final. It is not reversible for any circumstance other than child slavery. It is unfortunate that mags use this non-issue to sell mags. It portrays adoption in a light that hurts the kids and the families.

What if people use babies and children to get paycheck from good hearted people from other countries and never properly take care of the kids? I would say the better way would be building boarding schools. In the shool, you also feed them and give them safe place to sleep and live. The kids still stay and grow in that country and parents who still care about the kids (but have no income to give them proper care) can keep in contact with their children but they can't milk the children from anybody or whore their kids out to anyone.

While many of us would love to have the access to the opportunities Zahara will have as the child of Angelina and Brad, it does not change the fact that this woman has had her child taken from her life under false pretenses. The traditional concepts of how children in Africa are raised does not always comport to Western standards of family, and you should not judge the village to raise a child proverb. Many times children in orphanages still maintain relationships with biological family members. Furthermore, Angelina should come off her high horse and work to bridge the gap with this woman, so Zahara can grow up knowing the family that loved her but chose to give her a better life.

As another mother of a beautiful Ethiopian child I am completely disgusted by such apparent trash (fabricated or not) to sell tabloids. An ethiopian adoption has firm laws set into place and is completely (100%) irriversable under any circumstance that may arise. She may not have been back to the country since she adopted, but there are so many steps that EVERYONE must follow when adopting a child. Angelina went through all of those steps, and short of child slavery (which this clearly isn't) there is no way of reversing an entirely LEGAL adoption.

Angelina and Brad have the means and the passion to give their kids - adopted and birth children - a GOOD life. As Zahara's background information clearly suggests that her prospects would have been very bleak, Angelina did the right thing by adopting her. I am sure that Angelina and Brad will work hard to keep Zahara in touch with her culture and traditions. What in God's name would be accomplished by sending the child back at this point? It would be a horrible trauma for everyone. The one big lesson is obvious: when people adopt children from other countries, it is absolutely ESSENTIAL to try to find out as much as possible about their background, surviving family, legal issues and so on. Adoption is never an easy task, but it is doubly so when you're dealing with another culture, poverty, and difficult political situations.

My adoptive parents thought they were bigger people so they let me meet my bio parents when I was a kid. To this day, I hope they never let me meet my bio parents when I was a kid. It was a major mistake. They should let me choose when I got older. I would definitely choose wisely based on if they are decent citizens of the society, I would hire an investigator to find out first.
Why? Let's be honest. Most people who gave up their children are assholes. I am not saying all of them, but a lot of them really are selfish cold hearted assholes. They would never break their back for their kids. To let your adopted kid meet them, you bring those assholes back to your kid's life. It's only going to scar your child and mess up his/her head.
My birth parents both had problems with laws and they couldn't even clean up their act to be responsible for themselves and set an example for their kid. I learned nothing from them and I couldn't even trust them. Once my bio mom even asked me for some dough to buy "substance" and I was just 13.
For all the adoptive parents out there, you don't need to worry about other people's criticism.The child's safety and welling being come first. Cuz you don't want your kindness turns into a disaster - the bio asshole parents can hurt your kid again (once by abandoning them) by doing or saying something so inappropriate.

THis story affords Jolie a way to offer an excuse for not travelling to Ethopia AND it is perculiar that they had an answer to fast to the allegations. Normally when Jolie's people are caught off gaurd they say no comment for a few days.

I am no Angelina fan at all and I do not agree with the way these children are all over the place all the time. But she should not have to give this child back it has been 2 years and Z only knows Angelina as her mother and can provide a better life.

You abandon your child and run away- thinking it is going to die anyway, and your family lies just to get rid of it. Now, since the child is healthy and has money you want it back. I am sorry, but it should be out of the question. You lost rights to that child when you left it for dead and your family signed it away. They all certainly did not seem concerned with seeing her again when they gave her to strangers. I guess time, and money, changes everything.

Okay, Angelina's just being selfish. Her stance of not letting the child know her family and place of origin because it may be confusing reeks of her immaturity as a parent; placing her on bias and unhealthy feelings towards her family as burdens on her poor children. Many, many people who participate in international adoptions encourage their children to visit their birth- countries and families, as well as teach them about their birth culture. Shame on her. Any little respect I had for her is gone.
If Angelina did contrive this, there is some event to come that she has up her sleave. She will start some "honest adoptions for rich child users wanting a colourful family" charity, or something. And use her own "heartbreak" of having been a "victim" of a dishonest adoption herself.
She'll take Z to Africa and bring a boat load of camera's. She will try to look surprised as she throws a cloth over her head dramatically cries while introducing Z to the family that the bad adoption people and the bad press, prevented her from seeing.
They just want the kid to visit. That's all. Jolie can do that. If she can take the front door of Mad's school when she knows she can go in the back and go secretly. She can visit Z's parents. She doesn't even HAVE to tell the press.
Angelina MADE Zahara sick. Look at the family, they're healthy and plump. They couldn't afford school later on, but they could feed her.

They may not have been able to provide a lavish life for her, but the kid WOULD NOT HAVE DIED. SHE STARTED TO GET SICK AFTER BRAD AND THE KID CONTRACTED SOMETHING AND WENT ON VACATION IN FRANCE.

Did you ever think that perhaps they are not told they have parents? Also, when a child is at an orphanage you assume that, even if the child has living family, they are still up for adoption. This isn't Angelina's fault [the same goes for other celebrities and/or "regular" people who adopt in foreign countries]. She is Angelina's child and she doesn't have to introduce her to Zahara's family if she doesn't want to. Lots of children in America get adopted and know nothing of their biological parents, that doesn't mean that the adoptive parents have to go on a search for the biological parents to introduce the child to. That should be Zahara's choice when she gets older. In Touch has written this article to make these celebrities look like the bad guy for adopting children in under developed countries. Angelina is giving that child a wonderful life [even though I do think they should have more stability] and she in no way is obligated to take her back to Etheopia and meet her family…just like families in this country aren't obligated to introduce their children to the biological family. Like I said before, that should be the child's decision when she gets older.

4) How did they find out about who adopted the baby. That info is confidential. Plus as far as i know, most poor Africans only make like 1 US dollar a month or some low figure so they wouldn't have access to tabloids and magazines. So how would they know that Angelina Jolie…..actress…..has adopted the baby as opposed to Jane Doe. Someone gave them this idea.
