Jermaine Dupri's Message To Music Fans

a77493862.jpg

"Fuck you," Jermaine Dupri says.

The music producer wrote this impassioned and misguided essay about the state of the music biz.

Not only does it show his lack of appreciation for the people that buy his music, but he also paints iTunes to be a big evil monster.

Dupri thinks that albums should be sold as a whole and consumers shouldn't have the option on iTunes to buy songs individually.

If you just want a hot single, you should have to buy the whole album, Jermaine argues.

Uhmmmm. Yeah, did he forget that people will just download the song illegally??

Well I remember being a kid, Like 10, 12 years old….And when you wanted a cool song, you bought a 45…I guess that is before that dumbass' time…People have been buying singles for a long time before that asshole was born…What an ignorant thing to say….Whether it is on vinyl or digital from I-Tunes, it is the same thing…When I was 10, I couldnt always swing a whole album, 45's were a great option…Like Perez says, I guess he would rather have the kids steal them off illegal download sites instead of paying the 99 cents…People like him are hurting the record industry, not the consumers.

As someone who owns and produces content that is sold and not used to sell advertising, his statement makes absolute sense to me.

Ahahahhahhahaha! Im going to download one of Jermaine Dupri's songs on limewire just to put it in his face. If anything iTunes is trying to help the music industry so music isnt pirated. Here is some advice: make songs worth downloading for money and cut the bull shit. The real problem is you put fillers on a cd. If all the songs are good, we will buy all the songs. If some of them suck, we dont have to buy them. Its simple supply and demand, dupri.

    dear jd,

that disgusting sweater you're wearing in the picture above was designed by a fashion designor (read: artist) as part of an entire collection. did you (read: janet) purchase just the sweater or did you purchase the entire collection? i'm guessing it was the former. talk about hypocritical…
and that rant about mtv and bet stealing your $300,000 music videos? why else would you make a video if not to show it on tv? are you suggesting that each artist create their own pay-per-view network so that the businesses aren't stealing your creativity? give me a break. be thankful that anyone buys the music you produce. even if it is just a single.
why is it that the richer someone becomes the greedier they become?

    115

He said it himself, it's about the money. That's the fucking problem - dickheads like him are used to being able to throw out one or two decent singles and sell and album of utter shit off the back of it. Now people can legally get round that, it means he'll have to put a bit more thought and effort into his music rather than just grunting about his bitches, hoes and cars. Tough break, troll!

    116

I agree. Albums should only be available as a whole. For real Artists albums are a complete piece, a lot of work is involved in creating an album. I'm not talking about manufactured crap, but real music created by real artists. Music industry and musical output was better before Music Videos and Downloads.

  17. strawberry45220 says – reply to this

    117

I agree with Jermaine . i-tunes should sales singles that are commerically released and the rest of the albums should be sold as a whole.

  18. Shauna says – reply to this

    118

    Re: Totally Agree

I agree that an artist should have a choice on how to sell their art but shouldn't the consumer get the choice on how they want to buy it? I work in the music business, the salary I get is directly effected by mechanical sales of CD's but I firmly agree that the consumer has the right to decide if they would prefer to sample the album before spending $9.99 - $19.99 on an album where they only may like 4-6 songs. Before you see a movie you get to see the previews right? Before buying a book you get to read a synopsis on the back right? So wouldn't a single be a preview or a synopsis basically??? Being in the position I am, I also know that digital distribution has cut out the major labels completely and that's why they are in such an uproar about it. Digital stores such as iTunes, or Yahoo Music, are developing a licensing system where more money will go to the publisher and artist and are trying to cut out the label involvement almost entirely. And the good thing is almost any artistt can get set up with a digital distribution deal even if they aren't signed to a label. That's pretty cool shit. Jermaine Dupri is wrong in trying to cut the consumer off, if his music is so good and so important to him, he should be trying to get it out any way he can.

"Dupri thinks that albums should be sold as a whole and consumers shouldn’t have the option on iTunes to buy songs individually." MAYBE, JUST MAYBE, these artists shouldn't spend soooo much time traveling and enjoying all the millions that they have made from their music. There are artists that write one miserable good song…(or not good but just catchy) and they make more than some of us will make with hard work, blood, sweat and tears….in all of our lives by belting out a song. Not to take away from those with real talent but the constant bitching about them not making enough is really pathetic. Hey they can give it all up and go to a nine to five and live life like the rest of us.

Jermaine states that we should have to buy the whole album as if our money has no value to us, we have to buy crap we don't want ’cause he thinks it's right?!! I am sure he thought of that one while he spent time in his multimillion dollar state of the art home….JERK!

  20. Niobe says – reply to this

    120

Shauna…good points made in your comment. Back in the day you could buy a single, and it will have the one song you want in different mixes or what have you. It is no different, you are checking out an artist, if they are good enough you will obviously buy the rest….I know I have. I always buy the CD when I feel that the artist is someone who will not dissapoint me…and believe me those artist are few and far between, mostly I buy from Itunes and if I want to get the album later on I complete the album purchase through the option that I tunes gives to complete it.

HES BLACK, if he were poor like the rest of us, he would have ripped that shit of limewire.talking about buying the whole CD, HES MUSIC SUCKS. looks like like a crack head. NOBODY IS GONNA BUY CD FOR ONE SONG. HIS BLACK, HE WOULD NOT PAY FOR A CD, HE WOULD HAVE STOLED IT.

What Jermaine Dupri seems to forget, is the years that music fans, especailly hip hop fans spent buying crappy albums. Albums with two bangers and 8 garbage songs and the obligatory ballad. Hip Hop fans are loyal but have been treated like trash buy the rappers they worship, why should you drive a Bentley and I ride the train, when I spent 17.99 of my hard earned money for your trash record? If you got a hit, then .99 sounds like a fair trade, stop trying to fool the public. Jay-Z don’t need anymore of my money,

We finally got wise to you. And you should be happy for ITunes, it’s the only thing that stops most people from just downloading it for free

his title says it all - "a good album is more than a collection of singles." well, the time is over when producers can put two or three 'hot singles' on an album and recoup all that money. people download off itunes because they can buy only the good songs, not the shitty filler ones… when the album is good, people do buy the whole album!

    135

When artists start producing albums that are full of hits, I'll start buying complete albums. There are too many one hit wonders out there. iTunes will force them to produce better music or retire.

  36. Dupri-Douche-Bag says – reply to this

    136

We have a say in all of this. If they only allow the entire album to be purchased, or nothing at all. Don't buy the fucking album. When they see shit sales come in the first week, they'll come crying back to us, the consumer, THEIR EMPLOYER!

    Fuckin entitled rich assholes.

Jermaine Dupri is an idiot. Thank God for i Tunes. For years, music lovers got ripped off by artists and record companies making 2 or 3 good radio airplay songs and filling the rest of the album with trash. Boo-hoo. Jermaine Dupri wants to bundle crap with one decent song and sell it for a ridiculous price. Wahh- Wahh- Wahh .. Call a Whambulance! And Janet Jackson … God she can't even make one decent song. Finally, the music biz is like it should be … you pay $1 for one great song. I'll never buy another "album" bundled with mostly crappy songs again! God technology rocks!

BLA BLA BLA! 90% of songs on every CD suck..they are just fillers. No way am I going to pay the whole CD price for one song! Welcome to the new century man- you don't tell the consumers what to do. WE DICTATE WHAT WE WANT AND YOU HOP TO IT ASAP! That's just the way it is.
P.S. Actually- I don't even see why I should pay for singles. I download for free. "The best things in life are free!" ain't that right, Janet?

I think this man and any other man, including Jay Z, can talk when they are no longer driving 200,000 dollar vehicles and own more homes than three families and their relatives combined.

I have no sympathy. I don't buy from itunes anyway…i think cd's are way overpriced and artists make enough money - i download.

  44. Abbychuela says – reply to this

    144

Well, put out a CD with nothing but "hot singles", and I will happily pay the $9.99 for them. When you only put out one or two good songs, it's only worth the $.99 I pay.

  45. Erica says – reply to this

    145

"Why do people not care how we - the people who make music - eat?"

Is he fucking joking? Would I rather buy your whole fucking CD over feeding my family. I think 100,000 singles sold on iTunes could cover his meals for a few months if not more. I'm sorry that he's going to have to eat less foie gras braised in truffle sauce for dinner, but people have more important things to buy than Jermaine Dupri's whole album.

He's also not thinking about all the indie artists that are glad to be on iTunes, because they don't have albums in stores, and iTunes is the way to reach people without a prominent label.

In closing, FUCK JERMAINE DUPRI! He has no idea what the hell he's talking about.

    147

fuck of. ppl shouldnt hav to pay for ppls crap songs that NO-ONE likes hes just a money hungry shit is what that boils down to. if you want ppl to buy the whole album then make every song a good one and not just a space filler. the producers and artists are not talented enough to create an entire record which is good, and thats the bottom line.!

Hm, you know. That wouldn't be a bad idea if the rest of your CD's, other than the one hit single, being complete and total crap, Mr. Dupri.
    .
    That goes for all artists.
    .
    .
    .
You want folks to buy your entire collection? Make the music worthy! Stop padding your good shit with barely passable crap. Otherwise, you're nothing but a one hit wonder, baby.
