Celine Dion has cancelled a concert planned for next year in Halifax, Canada, because she was upset with what the local media and residents were saying about her.
What??? Really?????
The singer's manager and husband, Rene Angelil explains:
"I'm gonna tell you something and I hope everyone is listening. Don't try to find any reasons for cancelling the concert. There's only one reason and you know what it is," he said.
"I'm not saying that all people in Halifax are negative, but … this is a question of feeling. We're humans. If you would go to a city and you read day after day … 'This is not the place for you, you shouldn't have come, I expected someone else,' I don't know how you would feel about going there."
Angélil singled out an article by Halifax Daily News columnist David Rodenhiser, who called the Dion concert a "letdown" and said he'd rather see a rock band perform.
Many of the comments posted on the newspaper's website in response to the column were negative toward Dion.
Angélil, who said he monitors worldwide media response to Dion on a daily basis, said he's astonished at the response from the Halifax media.
"We get negative reactions all the time when they review her records or shows. I mean, this is part of the game. But we never got negative reactions before an event. Wait until she performs and then you can say whatever you want about Celine."

Perez (and Celine's old man) - you should do you homework and read Dave's article which was titled "Like Her or Not - this is Good News" and 98% of the article listed why it would be A GOOD thing to have her come to Halifax.
The fact is - the city of Halifax was feeding the public names like The Eagles and ACDC and possible acts for the outdoor concert - then they come out with Celine? It was an instant back lash from the folks who were expecting a true rock concert…

Celine Dion is a performer. First and foremost. She is there to entertain and put smiles on people's faces. I don't blame rene for cancelling this show. Why would he send his client somewhere where she is not welcome. If it is going to bring negativity and protests then why even bother? It's not even worth it for her. And also, if you listened to the interview he gave to the paper… Celine Dion herself does not even know this is going on. Rene takes care of all of this stuff. She really doesn't pay attention to it because she knows that her job is to make people happy. And she would rather surround her self with the positive of her career and enjoy the fans who love her for what she does. Rene is the one that handles all the negative and he chooses what to tell Celine and what not to tell her.
You all need to stop hating on Celine for this. If you listen to the interview Rene gave about this SHE HAS NO CLUE ABOUT ANY OF THIS!!!! She has no clue the media in Halifax were mean about her. I live in Hali.. and it's true.. alot of people didn't want her to come here anyways. But it's no right to hurt people who are her true fans, which I'm sure there are some around. Celine & Rene are both a couple of bitches.. If you knew anything about the maritimes, we're the kindest people. Celine has got to face it, that not everyone likes her and deal with it. I'm from Nova Scotia and am disappointed that Celine will not be performing. Halifax rarely gets any big acts as it is and Celine did perform in Halifax when she first became popular in the mid 90's (indoor concert). Though the city is known to love their rock/folk music (Country stars performing are a rarity as well) I'm sure ticket sales would have been sufficient to make it worthwhile to hold the concert. The media coverage is embarrassing and makes Nova Scotians look terrible. The naysayers got their wish but the city and its residents will suffer from the backlash.

It's because she will perform 3 more shows in Montreal. 88 000 tickets got sold in 35 minutes. It was simply insane. Angelil decided to put 3 more shows up since there was a venue for big bucks $$$

I'm from Nova Scotia. Halifax is a University town and is known for their love of rock/folk music (country stars visiting the city are a rarity as well). Celine did play in Halifax when she first becam famous in the mid 90's (indoor concert) and there was certainly not the backlash there is now. The city and residents will be the ones that suffer as this will not entice other "artists" to come visit this great city. I would have expected more from this province who are known to be one of the friendliest and laid back in the country.

I'm from Halifax, the entire bunch of them need to grow the F&*# up. What most people were saying is the venue was incorrect. If the Celine group was so confident in her ability to sell tickets then they should come and prove the naysayers wrong, maybe her camp is worried that she can't make it here.

All she does is talk about her home town in every interview and every award show she's at and given. All i hear from her is how she does it for her fans. For starters the concert was supposed to be in a big open field - the same place where The Stones played. Do you think Celine Dion's target fanbase is going to rock out in a field with no chairs. agreed with all the other halifax residents…celine's fan base would not stand outdoors in a grassy field to listen to her…when the Rolling Stones played last year, it didn't stop raining, but hardcore fans played in the rain anyway. I somehow doubt Celine's fans would be able or willing to do that. Bring Celine to the Metro Centre, and perhaps the reaction to her coming to play wouldn't be so negative!

I am from Halifax. I think the reason people are so upset about her coming to Halifax was because they were having her play an outdoor concert where the majority of the people who go are between 17-35 and not fans of her. I think if she agreed to play the metro center or the Rebbecca Cohen here in Halifax she would of had a bigger crowd show up and a better response to her coming. Last year there was a rock concert where she was going to play so people wanted a rock concert!

I live in halifax, I love Celine and I wish she was coming. However, the disappointment was NOT because _she_ was coming it was because it was an outdoor venue. I think it's safe to say that celines fans are most likely of the older generation, many of whom would not want to stand outside for hours on end,subjected to the elements, which in halifax, in august could be unpredictable.

As for Celine, well, meh…it was the wrong venue. She should have played the Metro Centre. The Commons is a terrible venue for any show, anyways, but the Stones, Bon Jovi, Justin Timberlake (who was SUPPOSED to come) would have made more sense for that stage. That's all there is too it. What halifax needs is a bigger venue. I believe that big-name bands dont tour halifax because they would lose money even if they sell out– the metro center just doesnt have enough seats to sell. the only big-name bands that travel to atlantic canada do outdoor events (hali, charlottetown, that hill in NB) and are obviously season dependant
if anyone in the halifax regional municipality is reading this, get us a CFL team, build a stadium and reep the benefits of having that sort of venue in atlantic canada.
