Halifax Hates Celine

Filed under: Canadialand > Celine Dion

normal_celinedion_delles_al__opt.jpg

Celine Dion has cancelled a concert planned for next year in Halifax, Canada, because she was upset with what the local media and residents were saying about her.

What??? Really?????

The singer's manager and husband, Rene Angelil explains:

"I'm gonna tell you something and I hope everyone is listening. Don't try to find any reasons for cancelling the concert. There's only one reason and you know what it is," he said.

"I'm not saying that all people in Halifax are negative, but … this is a question of feeling. We're humans. If you would go to a city and you read day after day … 'This is not the place for you, you shouldn't have come, I expected someone else,' I don't know how you would feel about going there."

Angélil singled out an article by Halifax Daily News columnist David Rodenhiser, who called the Dion concert a "letdown" and said he'd rather see a rock band perform.

Many of the comments posted on the newspaper's website in response to the column were negative toward Dion.

Angélil, who said he monitors worldwide media response to Dion on a daily basis, said he's astonished at the response from the Halifax media.

"We get negative reactions all the time when they review her records or shows. I mean, this is part of the game. But we never got negative reactions before an event. Wait until she performs and then you can say whatever you want about Celine."

Sorry, Halifax.

Maybe next time!

When you say, "Sorry Halifax, maybe next time" this insults me. We didn't want Celine in Halifax, which is the reason we are negative towards her I guess. Halifax is celebrating she's not coming. She should stick to Vegas shows PERIOD…

who doens't hate celine? She's the most uncoordinated thing ever. She's scary. She jerks her arms around hte most bizarre ways and she's not feminine in any way. Her voice is so nasal it makes me want to poke my eyes out.

PLEASE get the story straight before you judge my city….
It is not an open stadium that was going to hold her.. It was a stage set up in the middle of a park in the middle of our city…
When the Rolling Stones came this park was destroyed. This would not have been an appropriate place for her to come. Reason being… NOT because she isn't fabulous, but can you imagine early twentys - senior citizens at a Celine Dion concert, standing for hours on end… waiting in line for portable toilets…. and stainding in line for a beer tent?
The dissappointment from the people who expected a rock concert over shadowed the people who were dissappointed that now she is not coming…
Be educated people. Know that what the media says is not always true and not always a fair reflection of a place and its people
We did help people in 9/11 and we did send our troops over to Afghanistan…People I know died fighting the US cause…
Open your eyes… we are people too…

I live in Halifax and I am disguated with the way the press has dealt with this. Celine would have been a huge draw for us. People complain about it ruining green spaces but no one complained when the Stones played here. I feel ripped off and it is not Celines fault, she has a huge fan base here who will now go to see her in Quebec and spend our money there!!

i live in halifax, and i am not one bit dissapointed with this decision. Yes i felt her husband was kind of insulting our wonderful city, but i dont really care for what he has to say! I also found it outrageous for her to be playing at the Commons, considering all her fans are probably to old to walk or anyways. We need someone high energy and is a good, exciting performer… it looks like were getting ozzy osbourne instead lol………

I always loved her music, and to listen to her new cd, its not that good, i dont know if its cause i grew up, or her music isnt popular, but its not appealing to me anymore. If she wants ppl to buy her new album, she should do every province across canada, and be in canada more. Ever since she hit it big in the U.S she abandoned her country, and were over her. my reply is only to the "Sorry, Halifax.Maybe next time!"

speakin for the under 40 halifax, (well really my particular socail circle as well as every person ive encountered working in a store) as thats where i am, i consider this a great success! we didnt want celine dion to play this show, and we got what we wanted.

    so Renes a smart lad,
Halifax dosent have the money to put on very many good shows and wed much rather get drunk and rowdy to something headbanging, than listen to a vegas show girl (whos got some pipes-i give her credit because shes very talented)

in conclusion, i think the city are the stupid ones for booking her for this type of show, the people who wopuld be happy to see her come are more th ekind of people who wouldnt be able to stand for the whole show. ifffffffffffffffff you know whta i mean

i've got 3 words for celine and her husband: GET OVER YOURSELF.
the only reason there was any negative reaction, was b/c the rolling stones were there before… it's a rock venue. there was talk about all the different rock concerts that could be coming, and then they announce celine. the only negative reaction was rock fans disappointed they weren't going to see some of their fave rock artists.
a real artist would have kept the show, sold it out and proved everyone wrong. what's wrong celine? don't think you can do that. maybe halifax was right all along.

they could have overlooked the little bunch of noisy haters - they were not that much maybe a 100 - and sounded like they were 50,000, and go on with the show. Maybe if Rene was not her husband, he wouldn't have cancel the show but just go ahead to please the fans. But I think he got too emotional. Well I can understand… Love Celine, she's an amazing singer and performer. I got my ticket to see you in Montreal!!!

First of all, I am from Halifax, but I am currently going to school in the states. I had the opportunity to see Celine in Vegas 2 years ago and i will admit, it was awesome. However, I completely agree with most of the comments that other Haligonians have made. First, the article written in the daily news did state that Celine coming to Halifax was a positive thing, big names are always a plus for halifax, as they attract other acts. And yes, the journalist did state his personal feelings about the event, feelings that are echoed through a lot of the Halifax population. However, there are Celine fans in Halifax, and as proposed by many others, the concert was scheduled at the wrong venue. A potentially muddy field is not the place for a Celine show. If anyone has been to the show in Vegas they would know that getting to see what is going on on the stage is what really made the show, having a rock concert style celine concert is not appealing. I myself am a Celine Dion fan, however if I were in Halifax at the time I would most likely not have attended the event, the always present risk of rain, other bad weather, and generally not being able to sit and watch what was going on on-stage would have been the main reasons i would not attend.

I think that this situation has been exacerbated extremely, and Rene and Perez have jumped to extremes too fast before getting the entire story. It is great to see Halifax mentioned on Perez, but in such a negative light it is really disappointing. As for all of those Americans who are ignorant of Halifax, I suggest you take the time to really get to know a place before speaking ill of it. I have traveled to many cities in America and can truly say that out of everywhere I have been, Halifax is among my favorites. It is interesting how quickly some of you put down this great city without knowing a thing about it. Many of you, im sure if you visited would greatly enjoy it.
Hopefully next time Perez can get the story straight and look at it from all angles not just from Celine and Rene's point of view.

I think that Celine's husband didn't do her any favours in making that statement. Her show is far too massive and detailed to be staged in that venue. Also, her audience base is older and…how can I say it…of a different calibre than people who went to the Stones concert last year. Not that there's anything wrong with either group, but I can't see her fans being happy to stand all night in the elements. I went to the Stones concert and it was great and I've seen her in Vegas and it's a great show too but absolutely NOT suited for an outdoor concert. By the way to all the Canadian haters on this site….we're praying for you suckers.

Rene didn't read the whole article. This is an outdoor venue and her fan base really need the comforts provided by in indoor arena (not exactly hardcore if you know what I mean). She also has a free concert scheduled either the day before or the day after Halifax was scheduled and perhap blaming it on Halifax 'being negative towards her' was an easy cop out for Rene and Celine.

    Hey, im from halifax..
and really its only a big let down because we only get MAYBE 1 big outdoors concert a year… and Celine isnt a concert for mass apeal. Last years had something for eveyone (rolling stones, alice cooper, and kanye) i think thats why people were let down because we had hoped our one large concert would be directed towards everyone

What a pissy attitude by Rene!!! He is giving the newspaper columnist far more power by even acknowledging his column means anything. The columnist is only trying to generate sales and a reaction for his tired little newspaper, and Rene took the bait. Rene and Celine should ignore what the media says at this stage in their careers, since the fans attendance should be all that matters, not some dippy columnist. Unless the real issue here is that Celine was not getting good sales for this event, so they looked for an excuse to cancel the concert???

I think most people are missing the point of the negative reaction. For weeks there were rumours of Elton John, U2, AC/DC or The Eagles being the headliner and that they were going to make the big announcement….It is Celine!!!! There was no mention of Celine in all the frenzy of speculations. Well they are dealing with complete opposite types of music now, no wonder the reaction was the way it was. If they had said there are other concerts to be announced later or did not build up such a hype for a rock type band, I think the Celine fans would have their concert. Celine fans and the rest of us who do not care to see her could live in peace again if it had not been for the rumours that even the newspapers were fueling.

Have any of you actually read the article????? The people of Halifax have not `Dissed the Diva`at all. The article is well written and very clear. It does not ridicule, nor insult the Diva. It would seem that Monsieur `Dion` did not (or could not) continue to read the article through his crocodile tears. His immature reaction with journalists is just that. He sounds pouty and defensive with his responses and he never once mentions that he actually read the whole article. He is trying to put the blame on one journalist. Why did Rene not mention in his interview that the initial announcement of the cancelled concert was due to the inappropriate venue. Mr. Angelil is trying to put blame on a population who had absolutely no say in the matter and on a journalist who wrote an article that, for the most part, talked about how much Halifax and the fans of Celine Dion would benefit from the concert. I have been to many Canadian cities and I find it very sad to think this man is so determined to ruin the reputation of a city that has the friendliest , most welcoming and most forgiving population. I am still proud to call myself a Haligonian and I cannot point blame for this fiasco to anyone other than Mr. Angleil himself.

They wouldn't spend the money if they didn't want to see her. Britney gets a HELL of a lot more dirt spewed about her, and she isn't having any "omgtheyhatemeletmegohidesomewhere" fit.

Other names were tossed around like The Eagles, Elton John, U2 to headline the concert…then they announce Celine…wouldn't you be upset? Celine has been here I think maybe 4 times and the shows went well….so if Halifax hated her she would've never came here in the past.

I live an hour from Halifax (which is in the province of Nova Scotia in case you didn't know Perez) and used to live there. I think Halifax was SMART in not letting that twat play in our beautiful capital city! She is from Quebec and she thinks she's all that because she's French. Well let her and her pedophile hubby (and transgendered child) play there because last year we had the Rolling Stones and our neighbours Prince Edward Island had Aerosmith this past summer. Suck that Frenchies!!!

  50. Liisa says – reply to this

    250

I'm from Nova Scotia. Halifax is a University town and is known for their love of rock/folk music (country stars visiting the city are a rarity as well). Celine did play in Halifax when she first becam famous in the mid 90's (indoor concert) and there was certainly not the backlash there is now. The city and residents will be the ones that suffer as this behaviour will not entice other "artists" to come visit this great city. I would have expected more from the people of this province who are known to be some of the friendliest and laid back in the country. Just thought of something Celine is Quebecois and since the mid 90's the seperation issue has caused some dissention amongst Western and Eastern provinces, might have something to do with the backlash.
On another note - what is with all the swearing? There has to be a better way to articulate ones point.

I live in Halifax and I think the reaction was a bit over the top. The city is always complaining we can not get larger scale concerts so what do we do…we cause world wide attention to the fact that we will boo someone out of town before they get here. I don't enjoy Celine's music and I am not a huge Stones fan but there are people who enjoy this music…so shut up and let someone else enjoy the music they like. We are now world news about booing our own Canadian singer. There were people lining the streets when Bush came to Halifax and they stood there waving at him??? But let's boo Celine??? Everyone loved her when she begun to help pave the way for the US to reconize our Canadian talent. We pissed on Alanis casue she left Canada to make her career in the states. Celine grew in Canada, she use to be the darling of Canada.

I agree that the article in the paper was not all bad, so I am not sure why they pulled out. There were people lining the streets when Bush came to Halifax and they stood there waving at him. We need anyone and everyone to come to our city, we want to grow but we have a bad way of showing it.

    Re: Nova Scotian Girl
You know what it's negative and idiot comments like your and worse that are the reason the talented Celine Dion is not coming to Halifax. I live in halifax and am completely ashamed of the city. The things that were said by the public and the media were wrong. The woman didn't deserve any of those comments. You comments about the French show you exactly what type of person you are. I am extremely insulted by such comments and you should really get over yourself and accept people for you they are. So what if they speak another language and have a different culture. it maked us more interesting. however your comments show that you think you're better they others and I can tell you one thing you're not. You're not better then anyone else.
Since this Halifax concert is cancelled i will now have to travel to Montreal to see her in concert and it will be an amazing experience that I know. I support Rene 100% on his decision and if Halifax wants to attract more acts then the people have to get a clue and start accepting that not every atrists that come here will be liked but some people do like them. So let the fans enjoy the concert and you can just stay home or do something else and when a concert you want to go to then go to it, but there's no need to ruin it for everyone.

Since she is a Canadian, she was in Halifax four times in the past, to sold out crowds in the modest-sized indoor location.

So, Halifax ius very familar with her music (thouigh her show is likely better since vegas).

What most stated was her act was not appropriate for the outdoor location selected, where mostly rock bands played before.

Many younger folks (it is a University, party town) were promised an outdoor Rock band in 08 at the outdoor location (did not get one in 07) and were vocally dissapointed by Celine, as many do not lean toward this type of performance.

Her promoter cancelled, stating an unsuitable outdoor site as the reason. Later, her husband gave the negative press as the reason. This was odd, while newspaper web posters indicated they wanted another act, most journalists were supportative to Dion, but some did question the appropriateness of the outdoor site. Rhodenheiser was right that Dion's husband did not fully read his columns.

    But, that's history.

The anglo-canadians are SO jealous of Céline because she is from French Québec. Good for you Céline not to go to Halifax if those square heads did not want you. Hey English Canadians, get over your complexes of inferiority towards everything that is French and Québécois. We don't like you either.

When the Mayor announced that a concert was brewing in late August people in Halifax, Nova Scotia though it would be another concert like the Rolling Stones, or like past events on the Garrison ground like Nickleback and Finger 11. Halifax is a huge University Town with 2 major university Saint Mary's and Dalhousie. It's the younger generation that helps market these concerts and although Cline Dion would have been a great show, the market was not there. Unfortunately an outdoor show is not something that my mom in her 50's or my aunts in their 60's or even Grandmother in her 80's would go to. I agree with some of the statements that the show would have been better off inside. As for the News Paper Rene should not judge a book by its cover but by the loyal fans Celine has here. They ( Cline and Rene) were here 8 years ago and were welcome with open arms, love and support. If you read any article in the Daily News along with the comments you will agree that the comments are posted but many people ( not all) with little to no intelligence. I personal would like to see the Daily News remove the comment section from the paper.

Stop making it because of that!!!

Halifax doesn't HATE her….they were promised a "rock band", Celine is FAR from a rock star.

The reason we in halifax did not want her to come was because it was for a big even our 'concert on the hill' which is a big party event every summer. It just wasnt the proper venue for celine deon.

Really! You have never heard of Halifax! Halifax is an international city with a rich historical background known all around the world. However, I should not be surprised as there are some pretty good jokes about the average US citizen’s command of geography. I guess your negative comment is proof. Thanks for giving me a laugh.

I think Montreal is more of a root than hali to Dion, right? as I live in MTL, i know that Celines concert here had sold-out in less than 40 MINUTES, if there is any hate from Canadiens because she is so international, i would think most of them would come from Montreal. but clearelly, this was not the case.

It seems hypocritical to ask people not to pre-judge his wife and then turn around and judge a whole city by what one person said!
I love Celine Dion and buy her albums and concert tickets but I'm thinking she should muzzle grandpa/hubby. I mean yeesh she has a new album out, what kind of "manager" is he?

  74. Bill says – reply to this

    274

Celine puts on one heck of a good show. I understand the shows in Alberta sold out in hours. What is with Halifax and their attitude? If you don't want to buy a ticket, don't. There probably enough people in Halifax that would have been quite happy to go. Now the show is cancelled and her fans will be disappointed. Negative nay sayers should shut up till after the show. What a bunch of cocanuts.

I also live in Halifax. I like Celine Dion but would not stand outside for an all day outdoor concert(which it would have to be to make money) just to see her sing for an hour or so. Her type of audience aren't the stand around all day long, get drunk, lets party crowd. The metro center is the better venue where people who enjoy her music can sit down and enjoy it for an hour or two and then go home. The Stones concert this past year in Halifax you weren't allowed to bring in anything-not even a folding chair! If the same rules applied for her concert it would be more of a nightmare than a good experience. In closing-I would have to agree with the majority on this one-sorry!!!

i am not personally a celine fan, only b/c her style is not my thing. it's nothing personal, she is a talented lady. i lived in halifax, and elitest bastards run rampant. i am not surprised in the least that hali journalists are slamming her. it's what they do. look down their nose at things that are at all hyped, just for the sake of downplaying. i think she would be better suited for an indoor venue. that said, no one needs to be that fucking mean and disrespectful. go take a shower you goddamned preachy hippies.

Other bands will still come to Halifax because it's all about the almighty dollar (which is stronger in Canada for once, LOL) The fact of the matter is, the venue wasn't right for Celine fans. For them to cancel an entire concert based on what one person says shows that they have no faith in her fans from Halifax. I mean, you wouldn't expect a country music radio station to be jumping for joy that the Stones were coming eh? So why would you expect a columnist who is a regular on our Rock station to be excited for Celine? Of course he wasn't! (I wasn't either!) I think Renee and Celine wanted to do more shows in Quebec and needed an easy Scapegoat excuse to cancel their show.

And Celine? Maybe, just maybe if you would have paid a little more attention to your Canadian fans (you know, the ones who supported your ass before you were a BIG INTERNATIONAL STAR) we'd welcome you back. But to sell out and do Vegas, and then to sing "AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL" after 9/11, shame on you! You're a Canadian and you've basically gave us the big ol' FUCK YOU for the past several years. So guess what you got back ? A Big FUCK YOU from Halifax!!

All the best Celine, shame on you for pulling out based on a few opinions. Let's get over the whole "Halifax won't play with me!" childish act. Get over yourself, and your husband.

I live in Halifax, and no, I would not go and watch her perform, and I doubt that any of my friends would either. But to each it's own, and there were a lot of other people who were looking forward to her. For her to break a committment like that says nothing about Halifax itself, but really speaks to who she is. If you can't take a little critizism, then maybe she's in the wrong business. If Britney Spears can drive out everyday then I'm sure Celine Dion can do a little concert.

No our heads just aren't full of Bloc Bullshit. Celine Dion has a wonderful voice, but she thumbed her nose at Canada and now Halifax which is a beautiful city by the way is thumbing their nose right back. Looks good on her. If she had turned her back on her French roots you would be singing a different tune, one of a traitor.
