Halifax Hates Celine

Celine Dion has cancelled a concert planned for next year in Halifax, Canada, because she was upset with what the local media and residents were saying about her.
What??? Really?????
The singer's manager and husband, Rene Angelil explains:
"I'm gonna tell you something and I hope everyone is listening. Don't try to find any reasons for cancelling the concert. There's only one reason and you know what it is," he said.
"I'm not saying that all people in Halifax are negative, but … this is a question of feeling. We're humans. If you would go to a city and you read day after day … 'This is not the place for you, you shouldn't have come, I expected someone else,' I don't know how you would feel about going there."
Angélil singled out an article by Halifax Daily News columnist David Rodenhiser, who called the Dion concert a "letdown" and said he'd rather see a rock band perform.
Many of the comments posted on the newspaper's website in response to the column were negative toward Dion.
Angélil, who said he monitors worldwide media response to Dion on a daily basis, said he's astonished at the response from the Halifax media.
"We get negative reactions all the time when they review her records or shows. I mean, this is part of the game. But we never got negative reactions before an event. Wait until she performs and then you can say whatever you want about Celine."

Unfortunately the news coverage that reached outside Halifax is not balanced. A huge oversight is the mismatch of venue and performer. Temperatures during Sept. can drop fast and an outdoor field/baseball diamond is converted into a concert venue with portable washrooms, no seating (nor permitted to bring in), you're only allowed to bring in 1L of water, and umbrellas are not permitted.
I'm sorry but most Celine fans I know (like my parents) would never go to a show despite loving the singer to fathom these conditions. I respect her as an artist, and think she'd put on an amazing show in the right venue!! Halifax was over-reaching for this calibre of a performer without the right facilities. Last year the Stones performed, it was raining, muddy, freezing and people didn't care…rock and roll fans get stoked and generate their own energy and heat.
Also…don't suppose the 400th anniversary concert Celine is playing in her home province of Quebec 4 days ahead (and confirmed AFTER Halifax), may have anything to do with extra sensitivity?? Stay home a few days, avoid a lawsuit and blame that little ol'city of Halifax and all it's nay sayers!
ok, i live in hali too…and the reason why everyone made such a big fuss about it was because the concert was supose to be outside…a lot of the celine fans are older and didn't want to be standing outside with no seats…cause apparently you're not allowed to bring them…or unbrellas or anything of that type…it would just be more practical to see her in a stadium…which we do have. and if it does rain…i'm pretty sure she wouldn't really like to be performing in it, its just not "celine". so why don't they just switch the venue?

That statement is completely untrue, the city of Halifax and its taxpayers would be the ones dealing with it. Halifax was going to pony up an estimated $150,000 for the Celine Dion concert. The city had a lot riding on the success or failure of the concert.
Beyond that, many people are outraged not because CELINE DION was performing at the venue, but because anyone was being invited to play there at all. The Commons is just that, a "common ground" that is cared for with the money given by taxpayers. To shut the park down to the public for days, and for the city to be making money off of a venue which is public and funded by the people is appalling to many.

I would have loved to go see celine, but i wouldn't have gone if it was an outdoor concert. she can't simply survive on her voice alone she needs a lot of theatrics and that pretty much needs an indoor venue

Granted the commons is not the right choice for Celine… Metro Ctr would have been a better venue however not living in Halifax anymore does pay off because Celina is def slated to come to Winnipeg like every other act at the MTS centre!! We love it! Even if it is Celine!!!

I think the biggest reason nobody wanted her here in Halifax was not because we don't like her but because the media made a big spectacle about it being a huge rock band, a lot of people were disappointed to hear that it would be Celine. I give credit where credit is due, and I'm sure she is an excellent performer but it was not the right venue for her. To be honest, I don't think it would've done her voice any justice to play outside, she's more suited for an indoor show. Plus, the weather changes every ten minutes here, even in the middle of summer. I'm sure it would've been a huge turn out, but a very messy one at that.

Dave Rhodenhizer wrote a balanced article. It's hysterical that he is taking the blame for this. It lends proof that the media coverage is not the reason she is pulling out. Dave was actually the one journalist that said, "Even though I ain't a fan, others are…and it's good news for them."

I'm from Halifax too. It's not that we didn't want her to come. I probably would have gone just to say I went to her concert. I think A) they were talking about bringing the Eagles, who a lot of people wanted and B)a lot of people couldn't quite see her preforming in the huge out door area (the commons). Last year they brought in the Stones and it worked perfectly. Plus you have to look at how many people would have actually gone. Would they have sold enough tickets to not be in debt? The city has enough to worry about..
I just think nobody thought it would work…or were all hoping for a rock n roll band again.

I am from a town close to Halifax. Halifax is where we have our one huge concert every year. I don`t think it had to do with the fact that we don`t support Celine and aren`t proud of her being a Cannuck and all. I think it has to do with the fact that there has been so many petitions requesting groups like the chili peppers and so forth, and no one listens. Concerts hoping to make a buck in a city like Halifax are directed at a younger audience…celine is not for the younger people here. And I think that they are getting tired of not being asked what they want, and when they say anything, they are ignored.

I live in Hali too and guess what? I was actually at the concert Celine put on at the Metro Centre (INSIDE) about 10 years ago. It was really good! But would I pay to see her outside on the commons? If it was someone like AC/DC or even Justin Timberlake I would……….she attracts a different crowd than the Rolling Stones, and I'm sure those people would hate to stand in the rain for hours, nevermind having to use a porta-pottie that tons of other people just used before them. I have seen Celine in concert several times and each time I am blown away with her voice and show. What a classy gal! She need not worry about some little town in Canada. She is loved by SO many in other places, especially here in the U.S. Anyone who picks on her is just ignorant.

I'm from Halifax and I saw Celine at the Metro Centre in the early 90's, just after her first major English language album and well before "My Heart Will go On." She was not the huge star she is now- she was getting there, but she was still new to anglophone audiences. Halifax is a fairly provincial town. It was a fantastic show, but all I remember from the reviews were their comments that one of her costume changes (short shorts and long jacket over it) they thought she'd forgotten half her outfit.
Anyway, I would happily see her again- I would consider seeing her here in Edmonton or in Vegas, if I were lucky enough to get tickets.

If you don't want her, oh well, she'll play somewhere bigger and better(Toronto and montreal even). It is certainly not her loss. Many places are wonderful and beautiful, but no one will feel that way when people are hating on someone and trying to say that their city is wonderful. I do not want to go to a city with those type of people. Stop hating people and maybe people wouldn't hate your city(like me)
honestly, i just can't believe that all these people from Halifax read Perez's site. I'm here in Hali as well .. and i'm a little embarassed by the fact that there are this many of us who read this shit. lol.

I still can't quite understand why such strong opposition to her performing in Halifax. I'm not a fan myself, probably wouldn't have attended, but I certainly wouldn't sign petitions or chime in with those trying to stop BIG names & a chance like this to remind the rest of Canada/the world that there's this great little place on the East Coast that has a love and appreciation for many genres of music, a place that knows how to throw a party and entertain thousands… unfortunately the ones that dare not think outside the box have spoken louder than those of us who value diversity and instead of showing the world how we Maritimers are known for our hospitality, we now have made the pages of PEREZ HILTON and will be known for the PIE on our faces as another chance to be NOTICED on the map - passes us by. As a proud Haligonian that migrated West 9 years ago, to make my mark and to spread my wings…times like these worry me that the place so many of us love & long to be near again may never be looked upon as a place of opportunity or growth.
Soon no one will even bother to look up one of the most beautiful places in all of Canada, Halifax will be overlooked and it'll be a lonely kitchen party with the same tired faces, never welcoming new friends.
That's NOT the Nova Scotia I speak of and promote to my friends in the West.

i'm from nova scotia, and though i don't really care for celine lots of my friends love her.. i'm sure there are people who would have gone to see her outside or in- (soccer moms are people too) and anyone writing or saying negative things about celine probably would not be in attendace under any circumstances… perhaps the next time rene is monitoring world wide media he should take its source into consideration and not get concert-cancel happy
ps some moron posted about how the village halifax would be lucky to have celine, along with a comment about the residents being uneducated… just ..don't project opinions about a group of strangers level of education if you clearly have no education yourself about this group of people. it's icky.
