Celine Dion has cancelled a concert planned for next year in Halifax, Canada, because she was upset with what the local media and residents were saying about her.
What??? Really?????
The singer's manager and husband, Rene Angelil explains:
"I'm gonna tell you something and I hope everyone is listening. Don't try to find any reasons for cancelling the concert. There's only one reason and you know what it is," he said.
"I'm not saying that all people in Halifax are negative, but … this is a question of feeling. We're humans. If you would go to a city and you read day after day … 'This is not the place for you, you shouldn't have come, I expected someone else,' I don't know how you would feel about going there."
Angélil singled out an article by Halifax Daily News columnist David Rodenhiser, who called the Dion concert a "letdown" and said he'd rather see a rock band perform.
Many of the comments posted on the newspaper's website in response to the column were negative toward Dion.
Angélil, who said he monitors worldwide media response to Dion on a daily basis, said he's astonished at the response from the Halifax media.
"We get negative reactions all the time when they review her records or shows. I mean, this is part of the game. But we never got negative reactions before an event. Wait until she performs and then you can say whatever you want about Celine."

Wow, I am from Halifax, and I can say without a doubt that everybody I know would love to have Celine Dion play! I don't live there right now…I am living in South Africa, and I nearly paid $150 for a ticket to her Cape Town show in Feb, but since I am moving back to halifax soon, I didn't. I am really dissapointed! I would have loved to have seen her concert in halifax! The media should learn that personal oppinions need to be kept to one's self from time to time! Idiots! There was never a concert, that is what is being failed to be mentioned. There was never a contract. I am from Halifax, and last night on the news, when her promoter or whoever the hell he was was asked if there was a contract for this concert, he danced around the question, avoided it, fumbled, and then finally said NO, there was never a contract. So theres the rest of the story.
And if everyone spent their lives worrying about what others had to say about them… we would be living in a grim state. You can never please everyone CELINE.

I wonder how much of Rene's 'smokescreen' is really about avoiding a possible lawsuit for pulling out because he/she perhaps preferred to play/book elsewhere instead? It was unecessary and very unprofessional to cite 'hurt feelings' and then shed a negative light on a great city like Halifax. There would be pockets of people in every city who don't like Celine, as that kind of music is not their thing, yet Rene still has her playing those cities.Pffft. I think there was more to it, and it probably has more to do with (monkey)business, IMHO.
I absolutely agree that Halifax needs to build a huge indoor venue and get an NHL franchise/larger concert venue. Nova Scotians would definitely stampede the place and the hockey season's tickets would sell out. Plus it would be easy away game points to push the Flames up their division to make the playoffs, hehe. So, go build it already. Iginla and Kiprusoff look good close up.

Hey Perez! I live in Halifax and I'm sad that people think we're all a bunch of negative whiners. The problem with the concert is that it would be have been held outdoors (and given unpredictable East Coast weather, it probably would have been a shitty day). Also, her fan base is general older and I don't know how keen they would have been to stand for several hours, I mean, Celine's music is great, but it's not rock or dance, so you'd basically be standing and watching and probably uncomfortable.
I really wish she had gone to our indoor venue that accomodates quite a few people instead of the outdoor area. I just hope she won't hate Halifax forever

When she was here 10 years or so ago, she charged almost $60 for a ticket compared to the $23 Garth Brooks charged. Who does she think she is? I've lived in Halifax my entire life, and I've never been so proud of my city before. This is a small city and the fact that we could collectively make enough of an uproar to stop this concert from happening fills me with hope.

I am from Halifax NS (Canada). This thng has been blown way out of porportion. If Mrs Diva….oh I mean Dion has such sensitive feelings about her music then she is in the wrong business. If you actually read the article printed in the paper it wasn't all negative and was taken out of context. I personally would not have been going to the concert, but what about all of her fans in the Maritimes and beyond that would have wated to go and see her, does she really want to disappoint her fans? Maybe she should get over her snit and do her job.

And which album was the second highest debut in Canada in all of 2007? Celine's French album called D'Elles with 72,000 albums sold in week 1!!! Congratulations Celine. I am in amature theatre and auditions and Directors teach you one thing, That you must have tough skin. I truly believe they did not like the venue for her performance and were looking for a way to tell Halifax she would not come. I am not a Celine fan but admit she would fill any venue in Halifax. We just do not have a large enough stadium. Hey remember someone once said the Bare Naked Ladies hated Halifax but they still came back. As for a government decision, Picture Halifax after a Celine Concert and then one after OZZY, which clean up bill would be more?

Those who say Celine should have a thick skin don't know her for sure! She's heard it all… but Halifax's case is way different! People there started a protest group and even radio shows had people call in to make nasty comments about Celine. That's different than bad press. Just stupidity! Glad she cancelled her tour in that village! And now that René cancelled the show, now Halifax is getting the nose out of joint. Sounds like Halifax should get a thicker skin too!!!! And Celine's not the one loosing the most in all of this. She can get another stadium sold out anywhere in a day…
it's a rock concert venue, plain and simple. everyone in halifax assumed we would have a rock show. it was a great idea to change it up with celine. unfortunately, quotes were taken out of context just because there was a negative reaction. blown out of proportion. halifax is a great venue, and when they host the eagles, u2 & acdc (instead of celine), they will put on an incredible show. we all still love celine, and perez of course.

Hi Perez. I just wanted to send a little comment along. Most of what comments are being said are true to a point. I think what Celine and Renee need to understand is that the newspaper and media centered only on the negative. As usual a newspaper did not give an unbiased report. Negativity sells as they say, so they went with that. There were thousands who were excited but either didn't write in to the newspaper, or the newspaper opted to not include same number of positive comments as negative. Celine, I'm not a fan of your music, but am a fan of your talent. However, standing in a park, with plastic 'potties' possibly in the rain to listen to your music was just not something that seemed possible here. You know there are those in the world who love you and those that don't. I suspect our stats or just as similar. The problem was and is our local paper. Very one sided on most issues, not just this. And believe me David Rhodenizer is no great guy! I know from experience.

This is part of the reason why Canada's entertainment industry is so lackluster compared to the US. We're all too busy hating on our own, rather than promoting our talent which is in actual fact MUCH stronger than the talent produced by the states at the moment. I hear FAR too often negative comments about Shania, Celine, Avril, Alanis, etc… Are we retarded?! The short answer is "Yes, we're retarded!".

Alright..seriously. This is stupid! Yes, I'm sure there are people out there who hate Celine. There are people out there who also hated Backstreet Boys, Cher, Avril Lavigne, Our Lady Peace, Dixie Chicks, Rolling Stones and Hillary Duff, but they all still came to Halifax…and many more! Celine is from Canada and there are a lot of people who love her and her music in Halifax. One article and the responses to are not the opinion of an entire city! There are people who bash singers all over the world in ever city. That doesn't stop her from going there. The Daily News is just a tabloid anyway. It's not the most reliable source for news in Halifax and David Rodenhiser is just an opinion columnist. Celine and her husband are being petty and ridiculous and now Halifax has been cast in a negative light. Halifax is a beautiful city who loves hosting events and concerts when we can. Who would have thought that such a huge superstar would be such a bitch diva? I was so excited for Celine to come here, but now I hope she never steps foot here. I live in Halifax too, and i wouldv'e gone to her concert, if it were held inside the halifax metro centre where most of our conccerts are held anyways, her fan base is older women, for the most part, and i dont think that they wouldv'e enjoyed a concert outdoors (where you arent allowed to bring seats, drinks, or anything of the sort). also, our weather is very unpredictable so if it were to downpour, there wouldnt be a happy vibe. obviously there was no eral effort put firth in this because the idea of having multiple shows inside the metro centre never came up.
another point to mention, i was listening to the radio this morning and there was some debate surrounding this whole issue. some calelrs ere saying that it was bad for halifax so "bash" celine because she is a fellow canadian; however, celine dion considers herself an American, and she sings the american national anthem. so it's also negative on celnes part because it makes us canadians feel like she's ashamed to be canadian or something.
i wouldv'e gone to her concert, it wouldve been a good show.

i too am from halifax and know that another reason everyone was pissed about her coming was that it was gonna be $150,000 of taxpayers money to get her here. see, we're still waiting on our outdoor skating rink… which is also going to cost $150,000. so looks like we just like skating all winter for frees better than celine for an afternoon.

As a Canadian, we can say this reflects poorly on Halifax. I don't even, listen to Celine that often, however there is no denying she is a world class act that any community would be proud to recieve, except Halifax.
Someone at the newspaper should be fired. This is a sad event for Halifax. As a Canadian I don't have any plans to stop over in this city, how uncosmopolitan. No room for Celine! No room for variety! How backwoods! No wonder Halifax is often considered an afterthought. Tourism Halifax and the paper better get it together fast. (I see tourism loonies and twonies flying fast to other provinces)

they may have been at one time.
He has heard worse I'm sure, (especially regarding his
own conduct), so there is obviously some ulterior motive
for the cancellation.
Celine is a great entertainer, no doubt about it, but
don't think for a minute the majority of the population
will feel too bad about her not performing.
Halifax/Nova Scotia has seen worse traumas
than Celine Dion not performing, it's not even comparable.
In a weeks time this will be yesterdays news.
