Halifax Hates Celine

Celine Dion has cancelled a concert planned for next year in Halifax, Canada, because she was upset with what the local media and residents were saying about her.
What??? Really?????
The singer's manager and husband, Rene Angelil explains:
"I'm gonna tell you something and I hope everyone is listening. Don't try to find any reasons for cancelling the concert. There's only one reason and you know what it is," he said.
"I'm not saying that all people in Halifax are negative, but … this is a question of feeling. We're humans. If you would go to a city and you read day after day … 'This is not the place for you, you shouldn't have come, I expected someone else,' I don't know how you would feel about going there."
Angélil singled out an article by Halifax Daily News columnist David Rodenhiser, who called the Dion concert a "letdown" and said he'd rather see a rock band perform.
Many of the comments posted on the newspaper's website in response to the column were negative toward Dion.
Angélil, who said he monitors worldwide media response to Dion on a daily basis, said he's astonished at the response from the Halifax media.
"We get negative reactions all the time when they review her records or shows. I mean, this is part of the game. But we never got negative reactions before an event. Wait until she performs and then you can say whatever you want about Celine."

Hate her or love her, Celine Dion is a great talent and has had a fantastic career. Halifax could've drawn in a lot of money hosting another concert of that size. The thing I don't get is - why do people care so much? If you don't like her, don't go to see the concert. So simple. There's tons of acts that come to Detroit every year that I can't stand, but you don't see me writing in angry hateful letters to the local papers. I think the people of Halifax need to pull that stick out from under their you-know-whats.

I'm not a fan of hers. It was reported on the weekend by CTV Newsnet that the Halifax venue was not properly equipped to handle the elaborate production requirements for Celine's show. It was a technicality that had nothing to do with whether Halifax liked or hated her in general.
Canadians love to make huge stars, they support them to the top, they love to have their stars get bigger than the ones in the U.S.

I live very close to Halifax and was soooo excited to hear that Celine was coming then a few days later i was told that she had cancelled!! It was stated that the venue was "Not-appropriate" for her elaborate show, not that people hate her, although there was mixed reactions of her concert. I still love her!

Wow…so people pissed and moaned because the venue Celine was performing is supposed to be for "rock concerts"? Who the hell cares? You want to say Celine's fan are "too old" for an outdoor concert? Ridiculous. I've seen SARAH BRIGHTMAN perform at a sold-out outdoor venue and let me tell you, most of the people there were much older then people would be at a Celine concerts. Last year we attended an outdoor concert in Quebec City. there
was a huge thunderstorm during the event. everybody stayed at their place and keep their enthousiam.we just laughed at it. people's age was 30-60. So ,having Céline Dion in Halifax is a privilege whatever if it is inside or outside. Appreciation of it is just a question of attitude.

You're awsome and right! Perez is the bomb and so is Halifax.
It's the perfect size city, the people are down to earth and cool with everyone else, we know how to make people confortable. We have a million amazing bars. Another thing that's hard to say about a city our size is that it's beautiful, it was founded in 1749 and is filled with gorgeous historic properties. I love leaving the Dirty Dirty at 4 am and seeing everyone coming out of the bars in the streets on the way up to Pizza corner. I meet new people every week. We even have good old Bubbles Mansion and the Trailer Park Boys who come around and chill once in a while, no it's not a myth everyone. Hell I even love the arty dudes who play old 90's songs with their guitar on the corner of the street in the same hour and all the drunk people sing along and request songs. I love how SMU is amazing at Football and their on their way to the Vanier cup. I love all the events that go on in Halifax like our MAC Aids Fundraisers equip with Belly dancers and all. Best of all it doesn't take long to drive to a number of different amazing beaches and you know what we can take the cold Atlantic Ocean BECAUSE OUR SKINS NOT AS THIN AS CELINES LOL. The Best thing about Helltown Hali though… is that we fucking know HOW TO PARTY!!!! KITCHEN OR NOT!!!!

She has no idea whats even going on. So instead of making a personal attack on Celine… if you have a problem with all of this, complain to Rene Angelil. I am Canadian and happen to agree with him on this whole matter though. And what I find to be so funny after reading all these posts is how everyone is saying how much Canadians hates Celine, but yet her new album is #1 in Canada this week and all of her concerts for her upcomming tour that have went on sale this week all over the country have sold out in a matter of minutes. I'm from Halifax, and the major upset with people from Halifax is that we don't want her at that certain venue. Celine is a great artist, but that certain location is not ideal for her fans. If she played at the Metro Centre, there would not be this kind of drama. Celine is more than welcome to come back to Halifax, but choose a different location. We had the Rolling Stones last summer… and it would have been Celine this year. Not the greatest person to follow in one of the best rock groups ever.

Celine would sell out the metro centre probably 5 nights in a row. However, the same crowd that would fill up those seats in the centre would not stand in the rain to see her. It's just fact, nothing personal against the artist. I know lots of people that were delighted that she was going to play here, but disappointed that she was playing outside in the commons - which is certainly not an appropriate venue for this type of show.
So Haligonians: stop ragging on her, it's not her fault that this was set up so horribly.
So Rene: maybe get facts straight before you make a press release that makes our wonderful lil city look like a bunch of bastards

I'm from halifax, and I'm more surprised to see our city made it on perez then hearing about celine! i love her but she needs to realize that halifax does love her, we just dont want her to play at the commons! if she was in an indoor venue her tickets would sell out in a matter of minutes!
I saw Celine early early early in her career…she was singing at a fair in the village I lived in (about 1.5 hours from Montreal, on the Ontario side). It was before she had learned English, and she was such a lovely little performer.
All that to say, she was lovely back then and I'm glad I saw her for free, but I'm not fan enough to pay to go see Her Highness now.

Those of you who can't see that clearly have issues or have never been there. It is not New York, Toronto or London and it doesn't pretend to be such. It is a simple little town with a good demographic spread. It is also very welcoming to outsiders. Given its cold reception to Celine, I can only chuckle.
There are 2 things I've learned Haligonians are experts on: Partying and Fucking. Celine goes well with neither… unless you're really old.

I'm from Halifax, too. The reception to her announced arrival was luke-warm. As mentioned by others, the concert was to be staged at an outdoor venue (a giant, grassy field), something that I think many Celine fans wouldn't have appreciated, nor many residents of Halifax. 
If Celine and Rene only want to pick places they feel welcome, so be it. 
The "people" of Halifax should be eternally grateful to Céline and René for putting them on the Paris Hilton site, otherwise who would even know that such a town exists somewhere in Nova Scotia ? BTW I was supposed to visit your province next summer, now thanks to this incident I will go to Toronto instead and try to meet Jacqueline who is so funny.

Before cancelling the show, her senior citizen husband booked a free concert in Quebec City for the day before. A few days after cancelling the Halifax concert a concert in her home town of Montreal (inches away from Quebec City) was announced. It seems Halifax was a bit inconvenient for Celine & Reneee . . . so they cancel and blame the press!
I seem to remember some pretty bad press in Las Vegas when it was announced that she signed a long-term contract complete with her own theatre… and her feelings are hurt over a local journalist mentioning that her fans wouldn't want to stand in the rain and line up for port-o-pottys to see her?
