Halifax Hates Celine

Celine Dion has cancelled a concert planned for next year in Halifax, Canada, because she was upset with what the local media and residents were saying about her.
What??? Really?????
The singer's manager and husband, Rene Angelil explains:
"I'm gonna tell you something and I hope everyone is listening. Don't try to find any reasons for cancelling the concert. There's only one reason and you know what it is," he said.
"I'm not saying that all people in Halifax are negative, but … this is a question of feeling. We're humans. If you would go to a city and you read day after day … 'This is not the place for you, you shouldn't have come, I expected someone else,' I don't know how you would feel about going there."
Angélil singled out an article by Halifax Daily News columnist David Rodenhiser, who called the Dion concert a "letdown" and said he'd rather see a rock band perform.
Many of the comments posted on the newspaper's website in response to the column were negative toward Dion.
Angélil, who said he monitors worldwide media response to Dion on a daily basis, said he's astonished at the response from the Halifax media.
"We get negative reactions all the time when they review her records or shows. I mean, this is part of the game. But we never got negative reactions before an event. Wait until she performs and then you can say whatever you want about Celine."

I am from Halifax, NS. And I felt the same way when I heard Celine was going to the commons to play Aug. 22, 2007 the place they have this show is not right for her. I would love to see her but I wouldn't go down there to see her, there is no seating, Just craziness. I wish she would come back but not at the commons. She deserve better then that.
Poor, poor Celine, her feelings got hurt. Celine doesn't give a damn about the "Canadian" fans. When ever she is interviewed and asked where she is from, she most proudly responds "Quebec" and not Canada.
Halifax is not the only place that hates Celine.

I'm from Halifax and LOVE Celine, I think it's embarrasing how this has turned out. Just because one concert was rock doesn't mean every concert has to be, I'm sure the Celine show would have done well, followed by other concerts, Rock, country, pop. Hello Halifax, there are more than enough people in the area to support many genres. Celine has sold more albums than Madonna, so I'm pretty sure it was a good thing…..and then we went and ruined it. I don't blame her or Rene's reaction, I guess I will just have to travel to Toronto or NewYork to see her. I hope Celine realizes we are not all morons. I personally don't like rock too much but I wouldn't waste my time trashing it. Tell ya what, next time you don't like something do something you do like and wait your turn, I think its unreasonable to expect everyone in Halifax to listen to rock only concerts for the rest of our lives….as I said, spread it around!

Liar liar pants on fire. Celine DOES NOT HAVE shows consecutively but every 2 or 3 days. She canceled Halifax because she rather play in her home province of Quebec and screw Halifax and let them take the blame instead.
Celine needs to apologize to the people of Halifax for choosing to play in Quebec the day before and canceling Halifax instead.
Not everyone in La Belle Province of Quebec loves Celine either. We find her tacky and melodramatic.

I'm from Halifax!!! Personally I think the coolest thing is that Perez wrote about us. As for Celine, I think it was stupid for them to cancelled the concert just becuase of a few haters. I wouldn't pay to see celine and I had no intentions of going, but it would have done a lot of good for our city, economically. Most people were upset, more so, becuase of the venue. The Halifax Commons is known for shows like the Rolling Stones, not pop singers like Celine. It wasn't a fit place for her fan base. It was only a let down in the sense that it wasn't what people were expecting. There was a lot of hype about a good preformer coming, and thats huge for a city that doesn't even usally get acts that do, so called, "Canadian tours," becuase were too small. We don't actually hate her! (EXCEPT SHE IS A TRAITOR!! BUT OTHER PARTS OF CANADA AGREE WITH THAT, NOT JUST US!!) It just that we expected something different for the Halifax Commons. I think it's a shame they cancelled becuase some people didn't want them to come, with good press comes bad, they should be used to that by now. I know there was a lot of people who really did want to go, and it's just not fair to have gotten them so excited and then "let them down!" Rene is too TOUCHY.

I live in the maritimes (not in NS) and I think it's a shame that the show was cancelled. Celine is an amazing talent. I can understand the problem with the venue as I've been there and I just can't see her fanbase standing there for hours. Like people have been saying an indoor concert would sell out fairly soon and could charge more for the tickets. But this idea that just because Halifax didn't want her for this event that the maritimes don't like her. Send her to a smaller city like Moncton or Charlottetown and even an outdoor concert would get more takers.

I live in Hali, this is all thats on the news… Theres lots of reasons why the concert isnt going on… Mainly people are saying because they said Celine was coming to halifax before it was confirmed in a contract and then the media went wild with positives and negitives. and also another reason was that we didn't ahve a venue to support the type of show she wanted to have: like her vegas show. Well, if we cant even get artisits to travel past Toronto, how would Celine be able to do her even minimized Vegas show??
C Dion has a great voice, however she makes me nervous. Her personality is that of a mad woman. Not the over the top creative, just plain NEUROTIC. I've gotten very sick three times in Canada, the worst after eating at that Kelseys rest. matches the owner. I will never own a disc sang by C Dion.

ok I HAVE to reply - cuz I'm a regular here and now the city I live in is being discussed. I have NEVER in my life insulted an ENTIRE city - that in itself just doesn't make any sense. Halifax is a very liberal, live and let live type city. We have a load of cultural events and venues. The problem with this city is the Mayor, PETER KELLY. The entire time he has been in has been about fucking cat bylaws and fucking rock concerts. What the hell is trying to accomplish?
I like Celine, and I watched her biography recently. It showed a lot about her show in Vegas and her show actually looks really upbeat. I think a lot of haters don't know how good a show she could put on. But not in the commons.

The publicity was not that negative - not like it is now, anyway. Methinks Rene was being a bit sensitive. The Daily News is a rag and my dog doesn't even shit on it. It was not the venue for her. Isn't it suppose to be the artist that has the hissy fit not the manager… Rene blames Dave for his article… well the article was positive even though Dave does not like Dion's type of music. Then Rene talks about calls to a radio show… well it was a Classic Rock Radio station… how many Dion fans listen to a Classic Rock Radio station that doesn't play her music. So then Rene says they love Halifax and know they have a lot of fans here. So, he killed the concert to punish Dave and the rock station fans, but the only ones punished were the fans… well that's mature. Rene goes on about not wanting to have her perform in front of people who don't like her… well how stupid would that be to drop a ton of cash to see an artist you don't like… do you really think people are that stupid? Get real. Oh, and then another excuse… people protesting the concert… are you insane! We protest when George comes to town, but a musical artist… that's too dumb for words. We've had rock, punk, opera, country, blue grass, we even have our own symphony, you name it we have it. Paul Anka is performing next month, Ozzy is going to be here in January.
Either there is another reason which is true why he killed the concert, or he had the ultimate temper tantrum and is now looking for a scapegoat.

I learnt one word from reading through many news articles/letters to the editor(Daily News) and reactions to them/blogs and that is «Haligonians». I don't feel enriched. I find the whole situation deeply embaressing. I am sorry to the world for this sad incident. It brings me to believe Americans do have more style/class/savoir vivre. Many Canadians -lots posting here- come across as having absolutely none of these qualities

Re: Halifruit – You should at least get your date straight, the Candian tour and Quebec Concert on Aug. 22 has been anounced on Nov. 12 in every media and on the internet, your concert in Halifax was announced on the very same day Nov. 12 and scheduled to be on Aug. 23 but Rene after cancelling Halifax on Nov. 22, he had to schedule Montreal because it was open, montreal was sold out on all 3 concerts there and he is running a business, it's the way business management works. You should go back to school and take some business management course. Take advantage of all the universities offered in Halifax and get an education, get off the computer only if it's for learning somethng smart. Oh I see, you probably prefer to sit on your ass all day and wait for your welfare at the end of the month to go to great rock concert at the "Common" which I heard is a cow field that craps everywhere for you stups to eat that shit, that's where the stinking come from, ahahahaha NOWWWW I understand why Halifax people are the way they are. On a lighter note, im a celine fan..always have been! The only reason SOME people of Halifax got upset (not all) is because they got excited for a rock concert. That is all, it wouldnt' have mattered who it was….i dont think it was necessarily hate on Celine. Rene is just a little too sensitive when it comes to his wife. That's all….no biggie!

As for Celine, I love her music, and would love to go to her concert. Inside not outside. It's true, the venue was not right for her. If it was to be an indoor concert, I sure she could have sold out 2 nights. But for her type of fans, an outdoor concert would not sell out I am sure. They would not want to stand outside all day in the heat/rain…whatever the conditions may have been. She attracts an older crowd. Ones that would likely need a nice place to sit and relax. Please don't rag on Halifax, we would like Celine to come, just not for that venue.

Halifax is a city full of trailor trash! If you happen to notice - as you read all the posts from people that actually live in Halifax - it would appear that their true defining moment - what really put them on the map - was a Stones concert - and not one from their prime - but one from the latest geriatric tour. And now half of them are jacked on the idea of Ozzy coming to town - have any of you losers seen the show? He's cracked on meds and is like….80! And you guys think that rocks? Sad sad people. I'll tell you what - every Haligonian should cross their fingers - and maybe just maybe your mayor can find someone to blow the dust off Haywire and give you people the trailor park trash show that you really want (and deserve).
