60-year-old Mitch Winehouse has been so busy dealing with his daughter's, Amy Winehouse, drug and alcohol fueled problems since her music career took off, he made the nearly fatal mistake of never dealing with his own health problems.
The dedicated father ignored intermittent stomach pains, until it was so bad that he was rushed to an emergency room where he had to have his gall bladder removed!
By the time he finally made the trip to the hospital, he had developed septicaemia and according to doctors, if he had gone much longer without treatment, he could have died!
Woah, scary stuff!
Mitch says he was afraid to go to the hospital for a long time since cancer seems to run in his family, stating:
“I've had an uncle and aunt and a stepfather who died from cancer and my grandparents did as well, so in my subconscious something told me if I went through hospital doors, I wouldn't be coming out.”
Although a terrible scare, the incident seems to have turned the man’s life around as he has lost a significant amount of weight and is even taking his own leap into the music industry with an album of jazz and swing covers.
'We're having the launch soon and it's going to be Amy this time in the front row applauding me and not the other way around,” he jokes.
We're excited to hear if Mitch Winehouse has a better voice than his famous daughter, but hope he can avoid the perilous pitfalls of drug and alcohol excess lurking in the jazz and swing music scene.
