This is one of the best decisions he could have made.
The 29-year-old tweeted what he intends to do next, stating:
"The past few days have been extremely difficult. I recognize that this is not my first lapse in judgment, and I am extremely disappointed with myself. I'm going to take some time away to attend a program that will provide the help I need to better understand myself. Swimming is a major part of my life, but right now I need to focus my attention on me as an individual, and do the necessary work to learn from this experience and make better decisions in the future."
We have to give Phelps kudos for taking the necessary steps himself, before any court forced him to.
Hopefully he'll come out a changed man and swim off into the sunset!

Michael Phelps is a world class athlete and celebrity. So when he effs up, he effs up publicly, in a big way.
So everyone knows he got a DUI. His second one, specifically.
"Everyone" includes the International Olympic Committee (IOC), who tend to be pretty anti-drugs and alcohol.
Were they upset with him? Super pissed off? Totally cool with it?
The IOC Issued a comment to us, saying:
He was quick to issue an apology, and took responsibility for his DUI, excessive speeding, and crossing double lane lines.
Now we're hearing it seems Phelps might've been on his way home after an 8-hour binge gambling session at the Horseshoe Casino in Baltimore.
