What a sad day for those who adored Tilikum.

On Friday morning, SeaWorld made the unfortunate announcement that the beloved and infamous orca had passed away at age 36 from a "complicated bacterical infection" in his lungs.

Fans first learned the sea creature was ill in spring of 2016.

As we previously reported, Tilikum was at the center of the anti-SeaWorld documentary Blackfish, which exposed the cruelties of capturing and raising killer whales in captivity. The unfortunate orca was the perfect subject as he was captured off the coast of Iceland in 1983 and had lived in marine parks ever since.

The moving doc also honed in on the death of Dawn Brancheau, a trainer at the park who died after Tilikum pulled her under the water and fatally drowned her during a live performance. The tragedy spurred SeaWorld to ban trainers from performing with orcas as well as a national conversation on poaching whales from the wild for entertainment purposes.

In the statement announcing Tilikum's death, SeaWorld also mentioned Dawn, writing:

A mother in South Africa was arrested after coming home from a night of partying to find her 3-month-old daughter dead in her bed — after the infant was allegedly eaten by a group of oversized rats.

According to South African newspaper the Kathorus Mail, the incident happened over the weekend in Johannesburg.

The 26-year-old woman, who is charged with child neglect, reportedly took her daughter's twin brother to a tavern Friday evening and left her baby girl at home alone.

We guess this judge isn't much of a dog lover…

Back in August, a Canadian judge issued a very controversial ruling on the case of a divorcing couple who couldn't agree on the custody of their two dogs Kenya and Willow.

In the bizarre and incendiary decision, Justice Richard Danyliuk declared that animals aren't akin to children and therefore can't be handled in the legal system as such. Richard even went as far to compare the dogs to household objects like "butter knives" just to prove his controversial point!

This is so heartbreaking!

On Thursday, 2016 got even sh*ttier after the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species released a report citing giraffes as "vulnerable to extinction".

Obviously, the news is devastating to animal lovers across the globe. It's hard to imagine the tallest land mammal might be gone from this earth if we don't act immediately.

According to the analysis, the species are at risk due to a "growing human illegal hunting, habitat loss and changes through expanding agriculture and mining, increasing human-wildlife conflict, and civil unrest".

Jeez, what a doozy! It's no wonder why there has been a 36-40% decline in the giraffe population since 1985!

Let's just hope a September 2016 resolution adopted by the World Conservation Congress will reverse the rapid population decline.

So, are YOU surprised by this news?
