American Apparel’s controversies are SO common, that it’s getting hard to keep track of them all!
The retailer known for its voyeuristic style and over the top campaigns, has been BANNED in the U.K. after an investigation by the Advertising Standards Authority.
The ASA launched their investigation after receiving a complaint for their sexually inappropriate ads, prompting their SECOND band in in 3 years!!!
American Apparel fought back, and cited freedom of creative expression for their right to use the racy photos!
“[The images in question] are not graphic, explicit or pornographic but was designed to show a range of different images of people that were natural, not posed and real. [The ads are] less and certainly no more sexual in nature than a large proportion of images of other companies.”
The ASA has refused to budge, and maintains that the nudity in the images were “gratuitous” “sexually provocative…and inappropriately sexualized young women.”
We have to agree that the images ARE sexually provocative, but seeing some of their past editorial photos (below) makes us realize that this is exactly their point!!!
No word on whether or not the ban will be uplifted.
