It was the dress that made her famous, after all!
Diane von Furstenberg shot to fame in 1974 when she divorced Prince von Furstenberg, and consequently designed the wrap dress!
The independent lady said she wanted a dress that stood for femininity, individuality and inner strength. DVF opened up about the story after a story claimed she was a kept woman.
"As awful as that story was, it made me realize that I did not want to be a socialite. That was so far from the woman I wanted to be. I wanted to be independent. [Business] exploded. Usually the fairy tale ends with the girl marrying the prince But mine started as soon as the marriage was over."
DVF also said that the decade had something to do with it, since the 1970s were about independence, adding:
"I loved the Seventies. It was between the pill and AIDS, and everyone enjoyed an amazing amount of freedom and exploration in so many ways - artistically, emotionally."
When she made her comeback from tongue cancer in 1994, the wrap dress helped her skyrocket again! She explained:
"The first time I did it to be independent. The second time around was to show myself and the world that my success hadn't been an accident. Now I am in the third phase, which is 'I Mean Business'. This is a new starting line for me."
