Illamasqua Causes A Not So Beautiful Controversy With Blackface Holiday Ads

It wasn't enough that Illamasqua provides services for the deceased, but now they're latest Blackface and Whiteface makeup campaign is causing all sorts of dramz.

In the dueling holiday ads, one model is completely covered in white makeup and the other in black and share the same tagline "I'm Not Dreaming of a White Christmas".

Face palm!

Once the internet caught wind of the ad, the London-based makeup company immediately took to their Australian Facebook page to offer some sort of explanation:

"Obviously it was never our intention to cause offence. Illamasqua has always celebrated the right to self-expression and we continually push creative and artistic boundaries, priding ourselves on working with models of many ethnic backgrounds to reinforce this point. Alex Box, Illamasqua's Creative Director, has emphasised that this campaign is about colour ON the skin, not colour OF the skin, depicting polarity between the two images (both images are the same model) not race."

Whether it was intentional or not, Illamasqua probably should have thought twice before running these ads, especially with the tacky tagline.
