Gwyneth Paltrow Under Fire For Selling Baby Bikinis On GOOP

Seems like we're not the only ones who are uncomfortable with these baby bikinis.

Gwyneth Paltrow is getting some backlash after she featured baby bikinis by designer Melissa Odabash on her website GOOP.

The Melissa Odabash for GOOP kids collection features swimwear and coverups for both women and children, but the one slightly disturbing piece (that's also featured on the website's header, above), is the $45 navy string bikini for young girls.

Now, children safety groups like Kidscape are going after Gwynnie and GOOPie, saying:

"We remain very opposed to the sexualization of children and of childhood. The dangers have been discussed at length, so it is a great pity that such trends continue and that they carry celebrity endorsement."

We have to admit, seeing that baby wearing a two-piece is a bit jarring.

This certainly won't help with Gwyneth's "most hated celeb" title!

Thoughts???

People need to calm down. It's just swim wear. People are practically naked when they go swimming anyways. Those are cute bikinis. It Isn't that big of a deal.

  2. 2

This is a joke right?? They are just bikinis. My nieces are under 4 and have bikinis and they look adorable. There is nothing wrong with this at all. People need to find a hobby is this is causing "backlash".

All females need to be sexually presented at all times.

  5. 5

Wait…so it is ok for 4 year olds to not have tops on at all? but wrong to have a bikini on? wtf is wrong with people. Our world sux

What worries me are these people seeing a child bathing suit ad and automatically going sexual with it? I mean, really? I wore a bikini when I was little, my daughter wears a bikini - who gives a shit? It's not sexual - it's a really cute, girlish bathing suit. Get a f'ing life.

  7. 7

WTH? I see kids bikinis in every store I go in. If a man looks at a child in a bikini (or any other type of clothing) and has some kind of sexual thought HE is the issue not the bikini.

I have pictures of myself as a 4yr old child playing in the lake wearing bikinis in 1975. If they were thongs that would be a whole other story, but these obviously are not. They are cute.
Bikinis on children is nothing new at all and its adults with issues that are making a problem out of it.

  9. 9

I don't see a problem here. It's a swim suit. It's not like it's a thong or something. I have two girls that both wear bikinis. It's not about sex, it's about being comfy, being able to have fun and not having to struggle with a reg swim suit every time you have to go to the bathroom.

  10. 10

Are you kidding me? A kid in a swimsuit looks jarring? What's wrong with you Perez? This is so stupid. They sell children's swimwear everywhere. That's what people wear to go swimming. Including kids. Those images do not look "sexualized" to me. There's a kid in a swimsuit, how else would you photograph it?

  11. 11

Re: Lauren – True - kids wear swimwear and these bikinis are cute. But the ads could have been a bit less grown-up looking. Maybe if the kids were playing with other kids in a pool or with a sprinkler, they would be less likely to be deemed as sexual. Sad that we have to think that way.

they dont need to have ass shots of little girls.

  13. Staci says – reply to this

    13

That @ss shot was actually NOT part of the ad. It was an outtake that the media has taken and run with. Perez isn't reporting the facts.

  14. 14

I dont see it….maybe if youre going to sexualized it than you can say that about everything

  15. Staci says – reply to this

    15

Let me correct myself - the shot of the back was in the catalog to show the back side of the bikini, just like they would do if they were advertising pj's or kiddie panties. Also, it's a woman's catalog.

Sadly, times have changed. I used to go topless decades ago at that age, but the world is a different place now. You can't even take a pic of a baby on a rug now.

I don't know. I have two granddaughters, aged 13 and 10. They will most definitely not be wearing bikinis.

Remember the good old days, when you had to grow up before you could date, wear makeup, etc?

I personally don't feel it's appropriate but hey, I'm an overly protective grandmother and I make no apologies for it.

They can wait to wear bikinis, makeup, etc. when they're 16 or so. That's just how I feel.

Let's get a grip. Hannah Anderson & Ralph Lauren sell bikini's for little girls. I'm not a huge fan of them but some are really cute and seem just fine. Also, I'm going to tell you as someone with little girls in the family, pulling up a wet one piece swim suit at the pool on the 3rd bathroom break makes me want to go out and buy a two piece pretty much every day of the week…

    20

Yup, I totally agree. That photo is creepy, like a posed pic of a pedifile. How can anyone say that's doesn't sexualize this kid. Putting a bikini on a baby makes her look like an adult.
Terrible move. Creepy and a bit uncomfortable.

  21. 21

My grandmother crocheted a bikini bathing suit for my daughter when she was 3. My daughter looked sooo cute in it and looking back at photos… those with her in that bathing suit are one of my favorites.

  22. Leslie says – reply to this

    22

OK, I don't get the big deal and why people are complaining. Those are two piece swim suits for kids. Those have been around for years.

  23. Steph says – reply to this

    23

Really???? I wore bikinis when I was little. Both my babies did too. Some people need to get a grip. I guess I'm a bad mom right along with her.

It's not the bikini, it's the poses. The pix look like porn.

    25

I think people are reacting because the swimwear is string bikinis for children that are the same style an adult woman would wear. I wore a bikini as a child, but it certainly didn't have a deep v front and was typically covered in bright flowers and ruffles, and therefore looked like children's clothing.

WHAT? this is ridiculous….I used to wear bathing suit bottoms without a top when I was 5 and under! every other kid did!

  28. Terra says – reply to this

    28

SERIOUSLY PEOPLE! I am a mother of 3, 2 of them being girls. These are bathing suits ,bikini or not if one thinks a swim suit is sexually exploiting children in anyway than I believe you are the disgusting person. One who looks at a child that way needs professional help. Over in Europe children don't even wear tops. So, what to these children groups like Kidscape think of that? Let it go people, leave Jessica Simpson & Gwen ALONE!

  29. 29

This is absolutely ridiculous. Its a bathing suit! Theres nothing there to make it sexual. People are so sensitive. I don't even understand why Gwyneth Paltrow is getting any heat for this, its not as if she's the first person or company to make bikinis for children. Unbelievable.

If you get flustered by the sight of a pre-schooler in a simple navy two piece, something is wrong with you. Little girls wear two pieces all the time. I had a green two piece when I was 5…33 years ago.

  31. Mariella says – reply to this

    31

OMG! are you kidding me! other moms are do worst things… omg people is cray cray

  32. 32

Future sluts of America! Jk. But I seriously didn't even wear a bra until I had boobs…that was when I was 13. Before that, I wore a cute little one-piece with frills around the waste. i certainly would NOT want my kid wearing a two piece bikini at age 4…that's just so creepy. The parents may not think there is anything wrong with it, but there are perverts everywhere and little girls are impressionable. Now they can look at their sexy mamas in bikinis on the beach and see them making out with a hot guys, turning heads…its just weird. Let kids be kids. They have plenty of time to become who they want to be when they are of a proper age.

Suit is cute, ad not so much.
I remember growing up and going on vacation when I was just 12 in Washington State, and I had a one piece. Swam in lakes while visiting grands, and desperately wishing a cute boy would notice my tiny buds (which of course they did not - haha).
Didn't get a bikini until my tweens.
PS - This was in late 1950's and early 1960's.

You people need to calm down…I have photos of me in a bikini from A LONG TIME AGO. My daughter is an adult..yes she wore a bikini..look at the Coppertone ad with the little girl in the bikini bottoms with the dog…if they were thong bottoms I'd be concerned.

How low can you go Gwyneth? Truly sick woman acting out. A b_itch as she is is bad enough but right after this bad taste and or poor judgement at best, she is bought the Most Beautiful award by her PR folks. Really come on. She has gone to far.
