Abercrombie & Fitch CEO releases apology statement after backlash

What do you do when that stupid thing you said gets circulated all over the Internet?

Release a (sort of) apology statement!

Abercrombie & Fitch CEO Mike Jeffries' remarks about not wanting overweight people to wear his company's clothes have gone viral, and prompted a young man to rebrand the retailer by donating thrifted Abercrombie duds to homeless people.

Even Kirstie Alley spoke up about it!

Naturally, the PR firm that represents the brand had to come up with an attempt at damage control –and here it is!

In a statement posted to the company's Facebook page, Jeffries says:

"I want to address some of my comments that have been circulating from a 2006 interview. While I believe this 7 year old, resurrected quote has been taken out of context, I sincerely regret that my choice of words was interpreted in a manner that has caused offense. A&F is an aspirational brand that, like most specialty apparel brands, targets its marketing at a particular segment of customers. However, we care about the broader communities in which we operate and are strongly committed to diversity and inclusion. We hire good people who share these values. We are completely opposed to any discrimination, bullying, derogatory characterizations or other anti-social behavior based on race, gender, body type or other individual characteristics."

Ah, the "taken out of context" defense. CLASSIC!

We're not buying it, but maybe all the backlash will finally prompt the company to less exclusionary toward all body types and add sizes larger than a size 10.

What do U think of the apology???

Fake! If he really wanted to apologize he would have done it SEVEN YEARS AGO. He only feels bad now because his comments were re-publicized. Also, the "taken out of context" approach… how can you do that when 1. it's a direct quote and 2. what was said didn't leave any room for interpretation, it was pretty direct and closed. Fake apology and will not be shopping at this store!

  11. 11

His choice of words was harsh, but it is true and evryone knew before that this is true. Or else they would hire ugly and fat people. They target "young, beautiful, fit" people. Just like plus size companies don't tailor to people with thigh gaps. Every business has it's target, and Abercrombie is for smaller people. This guy was just an ass with his words.

  12. 12

This probably would have been more effective if people got outraged and demanded an apology back when he said it. Seven years ago. Anyone who has ever been inside an A&F or Hollister store and interacted with the sales associates would know he's spewing nonsense. Time for people to find the next irrelevant non-issue to rage about while pretending to be making a difference in the world by doing it.

  13. 13

His face is disgusting. How can he judge a soul?

    14

That's funny, because when I worked at Abercrombie (back around '06-'07- it was MISERABLE) all of the not-so-attractive people or people of any diverse background (especially asian people, for some reason) were stuck working in the stock room doing inventory. That's just how it was, no one questioned it and it was just known to be how it goes. They don't hire "good people," they hire snobby blondes who can stand there and do nothing, and any mildly intelligent people were stuck in the back. I haven't stepped foot in the store since I stopped working there… this is one of the many reasons why.

Re: NYhockey1994 – I agree. Myself included….we need to care for ourselves, be healthy, and lose weight. Only in America do we bitch and complain cause we don't fit into a company's largest size. Instead of that motivating us to lose weight, we blame it on other people or companies. Get a grip.

  18. Nancy says – reply to this

    18

Hell no! Too little to late!

  19. Sarah says – reply to this

    19

This whole situation is messed up. Honestly, It's his store he can do whatever the hell he wants with it. If you don't like it, don't go there. Simple as that. This is just distracting people from more important issues that are going on. It's not like A&F sells anything special anyways. You can get the same shit at walmart/target, whatever store you like, for a third of the price, in your size, and minus the obnoxious moose logos plastered everywhere.

  20. LIZ says – reply to this

    20

I don't think anybody is going to shop at A&F anymore… I know I haven't even looked at their clothing since grade 10. 1. No one wears clothes that has the brand name plastered everywhere (Only reason AE is still around is because they have normal clothes and not such openly branded clothes. secondly, no one would spend such ridiculous amounts of money wearing that shameful brand. 3. The CEO is a stupid fucker. Ps. still hate you perez, you're still a big bully that makes fun of kids. You and Mike Jeffries belong in the same category #FILTHYHUMANBEINGS

  21. Angela says – reply to this

    21

Bullshit! Really. Whoever wrote this for him should be fired with Mr. Jeffries! They cant even write an apology letter.

  22. 22

It's "you're" dummy! If you wish to appear all philosophical and stuff, you really need to brush up on YOUR grammar!

  23. Ta305257 says – reply to this

    23

I'm not a big girl and use to wear the clothes, I use to buy them for my kids, but I will never buy them again and just got rid of anything wih their label. I won't support a jerk. I hope he goes bankrupt. His apology is ridiculous. He is offering a lame apology because is afraid it's going to affect his pockets. Also, not all big people are fat and lazy. Some just had a baby, some are bigger bone structures, some have medical issues, etc. How about people not judge people based on their outer appearance. I'm sure you have something wrong with you other than a weight issue.

  24. lilibeth says – reply to this

    24

i think he is full of it,sadly almost all fashion, clothes or whatever sellers do think a size 2 or 0 is better sold than a 12 or 14. )=

  25. 25

I was thinking Mike Jeffries should be on the show "bad plastic surgeries".

  26. 26

At the end of the day it doesn't really matter what any of us think. It's how other people spend their money. We can complain all we want but if people still buy their clothes, it only validates his thoughts on his marketing plan.

  27. bongachik says – reply to this

    27

WTF, get over it people. Abercrombie clothing isn't made nor would it look good on fat people. The clothing is made to fit a specific, younger, fit demographic. How would Victoria's Secret look and what would sales be like if their annual runway show featured fat 'angels' instead of the ever popular stunningly beautiful models that have become synomymous with the brand. So what… the CEO was being honest. Does the world really need to see Kirstie Alley in a pair of track pants with A F on her ass. I think not

  28. Coco says – reply to this

    28

I don't think Abacrombie is even worth the trouble.
So what if they don't create bigger sizes. They aren't worth it. There clothes are lame, and create aberzombies ( as my best friend likes to put it). It creates clones, and takes away individualness. Plus their clothes are expensive, and poorly made. Their polos fade after two washes.
So don't even think about it, and shop places that actually make clothes worth wearing.

  29. KC says – reply to this

    29

    Re: christy
I never see the same people working there any time I go in there store. Their turnover rate must be extremely high.

  30. SAM says – reply to this

    30

If all you fatties spent as much time in the gym as you do winging and complaining you wouldnt be fat. I think its disgraceful that peopel think this is bad, in my opinion they are doing there bit to reduce the obesity problem in the world. Seriously it always the over weight people who complain. You should feel disgraced to be unhealthy, not there fault.

  31. Liv says – reply to this

    31

I understand why people would be upset, but at the end of the day some clothes should not be made in a plus size. Take these clothes as motivation to get healthy and fit.

  32. Tru says – reply to this

    32

I haven't head this much BS since that jody arias took the stand for her own defense. Oh please, give me a break. The only reason he release a "apologize statement" because of backlash there receiving and maybe its hurt there earning.

LARGER than a size 10? I think a size 10 is large enough; if we keep making being "large" and "larger" socially acceptable, we're all going to end up a size 12…

All this is funny to me because is there anyone over the age of like 15 that wears this shit? The last time i remember wearing something A&F was my freshman year of high school many moons ago. Once you grow up and no longer want to be a douche you get over it.

  41. 41

Only because of the backlash against the company. I am larger than a size 10…and I bet you a million bucks if I went into the mall and applied for a job at one of their stores…I would not have a chance in hell. That is horrible and I hope this douchebag gets his karma.

  42. Kayla says – reply to this

    42

shittiest "apology" EVER! Try and cover your tracks because you're scared to lose some money .. Maybe you should make bigger clothes and attract more people of all shapes and sizes hmmm wouldn't that mean more money? F*cking idiot!

    44

That apology was nothing more than standard, shallow PR BS. Being a gay man you would think he would be more sensitive to people he considers "uncool" (he looks like he may have been fat as a young man so hence the internal hatred). He is the worst spokes person for his clothes because that horrible plastic surgery (or maybe he was handed a bag of ugly genes).
Being a gay man I lived in A&F on fire island every summer, but no more. Any A&F I have left will be donated to a non-christian charity for the homeless.

  45. Ellie says – reply to this

    45

Hes only apologizing because he got caught and he's getting all this hate. Its pure bullshit.

  46. Carlie says – reply to this

    46

Don't worry, Mr. Jeffries, I wont be buying your clothing anyways. So you don't have to fret about my fat ass fitting into your overly priced crap. I'll take my business elsewhere.

  47. Jake says – reply to this

    47

Ugh i GUESS i have to go sue Ashley Stewart because they dont make clothes for Men or for skinny people. Get a Life. Plus A&F does make a size 12. Go do something more important with your lives and plant a tree or pick up trash in your communities.

Re: christy – this is so true, he only likes blondes and all the non blondes are told not to come into work if he is coming into the store, and why does he have a morphed elongated body?

  49. Seth Downey says – reply to this

    49

I will believe his is truly apologetic (or worried about his money) when A&F and Hollister has a TRUE PLUS SIZE section!!

  50. Kelly says – reply to this

    50

I think the bigger issue with that company is that they BURN their unused clothing. They don't donate it or even use it for something further.

  51. 51

Re: Cutie Patootie Girl – hey cutie patootie, it is always about the manufacturer. CEO's have a target, and in many cases choose not to make appropriate sizes to further discriminate. Not to mention places like A&F charge you a shit load of money for shitty clothes that are made in some third world country where people are not treated fairly to make the product, and they make you pay so much money because its "trendy." You are probably just as full of shit as the mother fuckers who work there.

  52. 52

I just don't understand, why with a face like his, he would call someone unattractive? Does he not have a mirror.

  53. 53

    B. S.! >:(

    54

Who cares what he said? what difference does it make to you? you're still going to wear the clothes . . . they're nice clothes! stop bitching and grow a pair . . . people are only arguing for the sake of arguing!

  55. giin says – reply to this

    55

why cut out larger sizes above 10? thats a huge (excuse the pun) market they cutting themselves off from.
only people who haven't yet figured out their personal style wear ambercrombie and fitch (ie. teens). besides a&f is so last decade.

    Re: Sam and marrisa

Wow,how fucking_ rude.I bet you guys are a size 0.
And serically half there workers are either whores, ditzy,or maybe normal!

    Mr.Jeffries is a shit face.He'a absolutely bad looking.Will never go to A&F!!!

  57. 57

Another brand destroyed. Nike…destroyed. Izod…destroyed. Ralph Lauren..now destroyed. Tommy Hillfiger…destroyed. I'll give you twp guess as to why (note…it's WHO is wearing those clothes now). A&F.. was great..now, blech…this was just stupid. And, once we gay men turn on you, the brand is toast.

  58. 58

BTW, that models' body is gross.

  59. Maria says – reply to this

    59

"…However, we care about the broader communities in which we operate and are strongly committed to diversity and inclusion."……Unless you are "fat".. (sarcastically speaking.) This is unreal. I think it is an even bigger slap in the face donating that crap garbage to the homeless. It would be honestly awesome if homeless shelters refuse to take their clothes lol. what would they do then?

  60. Maria says – reply to this

    60

Re: Cutie Patootie Girl – Some people have health issues. and Teenagers cant help what hormones do to them no matter if they "diet or exercise." Shallow minds…are why the "fat" kid stays "fat." Lack of compassion and positive motivation are also to blame.

  61. Lol SRSLY? PUHLEEZ! says – reply to this

    61

I will never shop there . EVER. I would rather go to a thrift shop like maclemore told me to.

  62. 62

What a load of crap. Considering that this guy is too old to wear any of the clothes or portray the image that he is trying to sell he should really shut his mouth. If you still own, or admit to owning, any of his over-priced stuff, you should first, go get something to eat because you are way too skinny and then second, take your items to a thrift store or hand them out to the homeless.

  63. kl says – reply to this

    63

Why is he appologizing? WHy do people think they have to sell clothing they do not want to If you are nota size 10 Two fucking bad buy your stuff else where. Forcing some company to sell things they do not want is nothing but bullying pure and simple. A&F have gone for years selling clothing the way they do so why do they have to change their policy? To make some fat bitch happy? I happen to be larger then the clothing they sell and I just go to Macys or some place else . Tjos is still America and bullying needs to be stopped. There are stores out there for big women ,go buy your cothing there and stfu. How dare you people demand appologies because YOU got yourself over weight and cannot buy clothing there, not A&F fault at all. YOu sue mc donalds for your getting fat and it just goes on and on, It is their fault you ass is too big for a 10? No it is your own fault. Why keep on calling attention you the fact you are fat??

  64. Corey says – reply to this

    64

Re: SAM – You are quite possibly one of the most disgusting people I have run into on the internet. Does the United States have an obesity problem? Yes. But that doesn't give you the right to shame those who have a larger body. Different people have different body types. As long as you're healthy and happy it doesn't matter what your body looks like. I'm not saying that he should have to make larger clothing since there are stores for petite women and plus-sized women, I'm saying that the comments he made are despicable and I sincerely hope he goes out of business because no one should be shamed for how they look. His comments about only hiring beautiful, "cool" people are disgusting. I do not have control over how I look and neither does anyone else. It is blatant discrimination based on race and appearance which is illegal and wrong. Business owners cannot decide to not hire someone based on the way they look; hiring is done on a merit based system depending solely on experience and the employees' ability to fit in the specific work environment. Hiding those who he deems to be less attractive in the stock room is a horrible act.

  65. ggg says – reply to this

    65

Re: tessiemae – The root of the problem is singling people out based on their appearance. How can you sit there and judge Mike Jeffries' appearance and call him ugly while also arguing that he shouldn't market his clothing to people of a certain appearance? You are one of many people on this page that don't seem to grasp the real issue here. If you are going to comment at least say something intelligible and logical.

  66. Jackie says – reply to this

    66

What a crock!!! The apology sucks. Notice how the dummies in his PR still say
"we target a certain customer"……So this apology is worthless. Overpriced, arrogant company that needs to be brought down a few notches.

  67. 67

Still not buying the shitty clothes!
