Selena Gomez Sparks Outrage Again After Her Bindi-Adorned Performance At The BMAs!

Selena Gomez offends Hindu rights groups again with her bindi at the Billboard Music Awards

Déjà vu!

Selena Gomez was criticized (and asked to apologize) for wearing a bindi during her Come and Get It performance last month at the MTV Movie Awards, but that didn't stop her from wearing it again at every subsequent performance, including at the Billboard Music Awards on Sunday night.

And once again, Selenita's Bollywood-inspired routine at the BMAs has offended Hindu groups and leaders, who have called it "insensitive" and accused the singer of diminishing the bindi's religious significance.

We think that if cultural leaders have explained why the matter is disrespectful and asked that Selena stop wearing a bindi, maybe it's in good taste to comply with their wishes.

In fact, the bindi was conspicuously absent from Selena's official video for the song, and Hindu groups PRAISED the 20-year-old for keeping the bindi out of the video.

Seems like a giant step back to us.

What do U think of the controversy???

I don't get what she's doing. If you are borrowing from someone's culture for a song that has nothing to do with said culture, than why would you do everything in your power to offend them. #disrespectful

Good for her. Bindi Shmindi. Its kind of dumb look though.

she looks ridiculous with the bindi

  8. 8

Who are we to tell her what she can or can't do because of the color of her skin? Shame on anyone who ridicules someone for trying to include other cultures in mainstream America. Not a pop fan or a Selena fan, but I'm tired of this anti-progress bandwagon we are on right now.

Should she not eat cheeseburgers in public in case she offends someone? Should she cover up her hair and body and not wear makeup in case she offends someone? Get over it. She's not doing anything wrong, it's a costume for a freaking song. People are so overly sensitive about EVERYTHING these days. Would you please become straight because you are really offending some Catholics and they've explained why so many times? Hell no, right? Same thing. Bam.

She uses that bc then people will talk about that and not about the fact she sucks singing

Don't see how it offensive to be honest. She's embracing another culture, good for her.

  15. Seriously? says – reply to this

It's interesting that people will be up in arms over anything even hinting at racist or homophobic or sexist. But people's religious beliefs, yeah, lets crap all over it.

She wore a Bindi merely as part of a costume to dance around on stage even after religious groups had pointed out that it was insensitive. Shame on her.

  16. Jessie says – reply to this

I could actually see how this is offensive… She's kind of sexualizing the bindi with her dance moves, the revealing outfits, cleavage, etc. I am by no means "conservative" and think it actually looks really pretty, but a bindi is not something that stands for aesthetically pleasing reasons. Christians/ Catholics are offended when pop stars (e.g. Madonna, Lady Gaga) use crosses and nuns in their "art" in a provocative manner. This only seems "exotic" to us Americans, but itt is a religion and a tradition - not just some exotic, stereotypical accessory.

  17. Norweigan says – reply to this

Does anyone else remember when Gwen Stefani wore those all throughout the 90s? I'm pretty sure pre-teen me bought one from delia's and wore it at a middle school dance. She wore it ALL the time and no one said anything back then. Don't understand why it is such a big deal now, besides maybe the fact that we are getting more and more sensitive as a society.

  18. Sjagoo says – reply to this

My family is Hindu, (myself and my dad practicing Catholics) but no one in my family found it offensive at all. Many people wear it as an accessory rather than a cultural thing, and in no way is she sexualizing the religion, rather it complements the theme of her song. vanessa Hudgens wore a bindi at Coachella while wearing white short shorts and a crop top. Which was much more revealing than Selena's outfits. It's ridiculous for them to be acting like this.

  19. sheryl says – reply to this

seriously thats some bull. these ""leaders" are probably offended because their own wives don't look good while wearing one. it always takes one group of people to say dont dumb shit to make everyone else look bad! i think she looks good. if we want to get technical then next thing they will say is people shouldn't get tattoos or nose piercing because thats part of the culture now. you ask any older generation and they will tell you, yeah its significant but they will also tell you its more of a decoration now. and i sure as hell hope they see this comment. people like them make me mad. more power to you selena do what you want and dont let anyone tell you what to do.

  20. 20

Last I checked we could wear whatever the hell we want to wear. If it offends you maybe you are too easily offended.

Sick to death of people clinging to antiquated, exclusive cultural crap. This is 2013, and we're moving to a planetary culture - you adapt or you get the fuck out of the way. You are supposed to lose the "clique" mentality in high school, but racist/religious police apparently don't…

  21. zul says – reply to this

    Re: Courtney
how would you feel if a performer wore oh.. i don't know a freaking nazi sign cuz it's cool? I know that is totally different from the bindi but everything has a meaning for certain people. That bindi is obviously very precious to those religious people and selena gomez just used it for a mere accessory without even care to know what it symbolizes and means for other people.

  22. Cookie101 says – reply to this

Indian People Are So annoying, she doesnt even look sexcualized, shes just wearing diamonds on her forehead that looks better than the REd Dott They use anyways. I dont understand why people are Attaacking selena when Miley cyrus was like 17 and looked like a whore in her outfits but selena is like 20 and isnt showing any skin foreal!! Get Over it India U suck!

  23. 23

DUMB!!!! Bindis used to be hugely popular in the late 1990's with artists like Madonna and the Spice Girls wearing them. They used to sell them at all the teen stores. So what if it's a fashion statement? How many people wear crosses or the Virgin Mary as a fashion statement? DUMB DUMB DUMB

  24. val says – reply to this

I think she is darling with a beautiful personality and gorgeous face and figure, always nice to everyone. Now that's got to be offensive to those who are beastly and bitter. Bag up the morons and know she's one of the nicest in the biz without having to show us all their body parts we don't need to see .. nor by now want to. There is so much tits and ass out there from Madona to Gaga and wanna be's, that most of us are bored seeing any. She's adorable. She is in love with her first love still and she's made a huge impact on so many in a positive way. Most all of us love her who have a life of our own and recognize she's not a crazy Swift who seeks attention all the time with less talent

  25. wtf says – reply to this

I have never commented on perez articles, but as an indian girl literally wtf. shut up "indian organizations" your making the rest of us look like assholes. i think its awesome and that its great shes incorporating beautiful indian fashion statements in her music. this is a universal sorry from the progressive indian community

  26. kat says – reply to this

the bindi looks good, she looked amazing last night

  27. tinkerwhat says – reply to this

I completely understand that some of you are huge fans of Selena, but let's not take this anger out on all Indians like cookie 101. First of all, all Indians are not Hindu. Second of all, all Hindus do not disapprove of her wearing it, it's just a specific religious organization, and we all know that virtually all religious organizations in existence are conservative. Regardless of whether or not you care or whether or not you think its offensive, if it genuinely is insulting their religion, she should stop wearing out of respect to that religion. She is not an everyday commonplace person. If you guys wear one, no one will care, but for someone of her stature to wear one and then writhe around on television and in the media, it can send the wrong message to little girls watching her performance. It's the same reason why some conservative christians take offense to pop stars dancing around with crosses in their cleavage. Finally, i'm not saying that Selena is a slut or a whore or any of those things, but she does not dress modestly, especially on stage. No she is not a stripper, but since when does "not a stripper" = modest.

  28. debtee says – reply to this

Heaps of non Christians wear crosses, what's the difference! I'm so over all these religious groups thinking that they control everything and taking offence all the time.
Who even knows if this is a Bindi? It's a piece of jewellery on her forehead!
Good for Selena, for not backing down to ridiculous demands.

  29. 29

Rather than praising someone who tries to embrace Indian culture we scold them? In what world does this make sense? Many non-Christians wear a cross. When did being 'easily offended' become something to be proud of, and even worse, give license to impose your self-righteous views on others and force them to apologize? The problem in America is that we're not shedding ENOUGH light on other cultures, not the other way around! As long as people continue to be punished for embracing other cultures, it will always be easier and less 'offensive' to just have everything and everyone be 'white'. Who the hell wants that? We need MORE cultures included, not less.

Re: Courtney – aaahhh but the thing is the bindi isn't a costume if it were a costume for hindus there wouldnt be an issue but it's a really significant and important symbol of faith and she's flippantly using it cause it looks cool while simultaneously ignoring and dismissing its cultural and religious significance! it's not cool, same w/ non-christians wearing crosses and non-jews wearing stars of david.

  31. Valeria says – reply to this

    Listen up, you sensitive freaks.

Selena Gomez is very humble and modest and wears that not to offend anyone, but to accessorize. I don't understand why these religious leaders feel the need to attack her for this. She probably doesn't even know what it's called, it just looks really good and goes well with the song because it's kind of tribal and exotic and that's what that look creates. An exotic feel. Her performance was not sexual, racy, or anything of that matter. She's a 20 year old woman who does not need another group of people (aside from the insanely mental beliebers) attacking her. Okay? She's a very sweet person and does not need this bullcrap.

Who knew the billboard music awards were on the Hindu's radar.

They weren't offended by the nikki and lil wayne lap dance?

  33. indianoverhere says – reply to this

Im indian and i can vouch for every single indian person i know that no one honeslty gives two shits about her wearing a bindi lmao. this is some hindu group who have nothing to do but start up some drama to gain attention. bindis are worn as a accessory for formal indian parties.

same as Madonna wearing a rosary…

  35. DeeWA2013 says – reply to this

Bindi is one thing, but my thing was the REPEAT of her MTV performance. WHO DOES THAT? Every major TV performance should have NEW STUFF. Not to mention how DUMB the whole song & routine make her look about her baby boy bf. GROSS! I just know at 40 she'll look back & go "EEEWWWW, how could I have been SO DUMB???"

  36. zh says – reply to this

Re: Cookie101 – I hope you realize how unbelievably stupid and ignorant you sound in your comment. Shame on your parents for raising you to be such a judgmental, uneducated, and incoherent person. Go learn a little bit about other cultures before you go bashing an entire country. Seriously, people like you make me fearful of what the future of this country will be like.

  37. anonymous says – reply to this

all i can say is that people cannot accept it when other people do something they don't like. but when they do it, it's perfectly fine to them. if selena wants to wear it, let her. next time are you gonna sue her for sneezing? it's not even a real bindi! it's just crystals with sticky backs.

  38. Blah says – reply to this

You people are disrespectful. The bindi has beautiful meaning but i do think they are going overboard with telling her not to wear them. Each color has meaning. The bindi is said to retain energy and strengthen concentration. So maybe the culture and their religion has nothing to do with the song but the bindi goes along with it a little.

  39. selena luơng says – reply to this

fuck off haters, she is not doing anything wrong, you guys are just jealous with her,get lost!!!

  40. Jake says – reply to this

This is so silly. She wore a bindi, many people wear them as fashion accessories, most people aren't offended

  41. BEcca says – reply to this

She's not dis respecting their religion, in fact she might be showing her love for Hinduism, I've seen so many other people wearing bindis and I can't see why Selena can't wear one too just because she's famous.

  42. IvonneSwifty13 says – reply to this

I think it's so stupid to get mad at her for wering a Bindi, but if it's such a big deal to them maybe Selena shouldn't wear it just to keep herself out of trouble.

  43. rebz says – reply to this

Re: val – um sorry i agree but not all swifties are crazy for attention…. cuz im a swiftie too but im not crazy….

  44. Stacy says – reply to this

I don't understand why they're getting mad at her. Many Indians who are not Hindus wear bindis with their outfits just for the look..it's a part of the culture, not just the religion..people wear it to parties and even in bollywood movies. If they're that outraged, why aren't they complaining about the bollywood stars who wear it for fun..just cuz selena's not Indian, she can't wear a bindi? That makes no sense.

  45. destiny says – reply to this

    she's an idiot

  46. SPR says – reply to this

What a load of rubbish! I am from India and a bindi is just an adornment, don't know why everyone is getting all worked up. She is young, leave her alone. As for apologizing, to whom? For what? TOTALLY RIDICULOUS !!

  47. Charlotte says – reply to this

She's just desperate for attention is all.

  48. Yasmine says – reply to this

I don't think the people have to explain themselves. They don't like it period!! she needs all the fans she can get why keep doing it if they are so offended by it???

  49. Chris says – reply to this

She's exposing people to other cultures. You'd think the Hindu groups and leaders would be happy, not offended.

  50. neicy says – reply to this

people are not sensitive, you are insensitive some people have things in their culture and religion that are very close to them and if someone takes it as a joke or use it as a fashion symbol like selena did without knowing the history or significance behind it can get people really mad..im assuming you have not culture and arent religious to understand this

  51. neicy says – reply to this

i wasnt even going to say this until i read these comments about bindi is dumb and indians are annoying.I am assuming most of you commenters are White and as we all know White people have no culture soo you guys cant possibly understand anything that has to do with culture and people being offended when White people do and say racist shit.like come on it is insensitive indians are not annoying and dumb. if you you racist whites had a culture or something special then you would understand but i cannot except stupid, simple,no culture, rhythm less Bigots to understand..

Re: Cookie101 – NOT ALL INDIAN PEOPLE SUCK! in fact some are actually very nice.

  54. PadmaL says – reply to this

Wow! reading some of the below comments is laughable, ignorance is clearly the biggest problem here. Ever wonder, why? it is disrespectful to wear a bindhi?. It is ONLY considered disrespectful in hindus when an unmarried woman wears a RED bindhi, because it disrespectful to hindu married women who wear it as reminder of her wedding vows and her promise to god. So what I see Selena wearing here is completely harmless, woman all over india wear different colored bindis as part of their ensemble (married or not). Each culture has it own ways of showing their love for god, i think the least we can do, to be more 'culturally forward' is to read up a little before writing absolutely false information, and making other readers believe something that is wrong.

  55. Colin Cumming says – reply to this

Re: Courtney – not the same thing since being gay isn't a choice and wearing a bindi is.

  56. hkn says – reply to this

thats the dumbest thing ive ever heard. hindus are not the only people who wear bindis. People of other religions (ie. Muslims, Sikhs..) wear them and no one protests because its also a cultural thing. its not strictly a religious thing. theres nothing wrong with her wearing them.

  57. Sunny says – reply to this

Did we forget about this? When Gwen Stefani was rocking the bindi…and yknow, she didn’t just do it once or twice, it was a “thing” for a while.

    Then there’s Katy Perry;
    Miley Cyrus;
    Alyssa Milano;
    Alicia Keys; [several occasions]
    Jessica Simpson; [also wearing henna]

And I’m sure there are many, many others. Have you guys seen the giant dream catcher Miley Cyrus has tattoed? Remember the “Arabic” music video that Hillary Duff has for Stranger? Oh, and the recent BULLSHIT with Rihanna and Coldplay, for Princess of China.

First off, Americans love to take bits of other cultures, and if theyre all “similar” [ie. To many, there’s barely a dfference between Chinese and Japanese] they’ll mash them up. Example, Rihanna in “Princess of China”; Thai, Chinese, Japanese and everything in between was mixed in there. What Selena did was no big effin deal, and she wasn’t disrespectful at all. I can understand people being upset over their culture being not respected, but the bindi has become a fashion accessory as well, many Asian women wear them out of its religious context, and it doesn’t become a huge issue. Can we all just lighten up?

That being said, there DOES need to be more respect towards other cultures, and the difference between cultures should be understood.
