AMAs 2013: Katy Perry gets her geisha on with her performance outfit!

Serving up some drama!

Katy Perry traded her classic floral ODLR gown for a floral print kimono during her opening performance at the AMAs tonight!

The singer fabulously channeled her inner geisha while fiercely belting out Unconditionally as paper flowers floated all around her.

We're feeling it! How ’bout U???

Singing was bad and performance was sooo boring :/

How the hell is this not considered racist? Julianna Hough was labelled racist for her halloween costume and this Japanese costume is not considered racist???? There is such a double standard here, not cool.

    Kinda scary looking

Re: Maria – I guarantee lots of people found this offensive. People don't usually like to see their cultures being used as a costume. Perez isn't pointing it out because he's so up Katy Perry's ass.

It's also offensive to call it evocative of Miss Saigon, considering Miss Saigon is about the Vietnam war and has nothing to do with Japan/geishas.

? Are the AMA's for only White and Black people And some times Latinos?
Cause I seriously don't remember the last time someone of any other ethnic who are just as talented and do not receive the attention for it!

I think everyone has the right to feel however they want about whether something is racist or not, particularly the Japanese community. That being said, for centuries actors and actresses have transformed themselves in stage theater to portray characters, and if you take her performance in that context (if you choose, you don't have to) she may be using it as a performance tool opposed to appropriating a culture or trying to poke fun or make light of the culture. Katy Perry doesn't seem like the type of person who would do something to intentionally offend anyone, but she probably should have thought this through more, especially after the Selena Gomez bindi situation…

Re: Maria – I agree with you. Same with when Selena Gomez wore a bindi during a performance and had to apologize later on. To me, this is no different. I don't get how people are supposed to know what is considered right/wrong anymore when there are all of these 'rules' that they are supposed to follow when it comes to other cultures.

Katy has said that one of her favorite places in the world is Tokyo. She loves Japanese people and they seem to love her when she visits them. I'm sure Katy went to a restaurant or something with Geisha girls and she liked how they looked and acted. Katy was simply bringing her fondness for Japanese geisha culture to the AMA awards.

I think Katy is about as non-judgmental and non-racist as it gets. Katy has campaigned for gay marriage and women's rights and all sorts of stuff.

Heck, if Katy wasn't dating John Mayer, I bet she'd give a Japanese-American guy a shot at dating her. She might be like white actress Lauren Cohan whose character on "Walking Dead" is dating an Asian guy. I think Lauren is hot. Hollywood producers should put her in movies and more TV shows.

Re: sick_girl – You are CORRECT! I am of Japamese heritage. I am SICK and tired of people trying to immitate asian culture badly and looking like cartoon characters. This WAS NOT A KIMONO!!!! Her make-up looks like a damn drag queen and is NOT geisha make-up. Whoever did it should be fired. I did Japanese classical dance for over 35 years, so yes I do know what the makeup should look like. Her song has nothing to do with Japan or asia and there was NO reason to lool like some sort of japanese clown. Shame on her! Do it right if you feel you have to do it.

Re: someguy2621 – That would be fine if she actually wore a KIMONO _ which this hideous costume of her was not! YES, I do know what a REAL kimono looks like - I own several. I am part Japanese and did classical dance for over 35 years. Her "triibute" is a joke and insulting. Whoever did her make-up needs lessons.
