OK, “obliteration” may be an overstatement, but you get the point!!
Spanx and other types of shapewear are a go-to for A-listers on red carpets — such as Beyoncé, Emma Watson, and Sofia Vergara, to name a few — as well as for people just wanting extra support beneath their clothes!
But all that squishing and squeezing of the internal organs can actually have unhealthy side effects.
"Theoretically, there is a risk of increasing acid reflux. Spanx push your stomach contents up towards your esophagus."
So does that mean everyone needs to stop wearing Spanx immediately? Not necessarily!
Dr. Rajapaksa continued:
"If you have acid reflux, it would probably be best to stay away. People prone to irritable bowel syndrome or bloating also might find it uncomfortable. Even the average person might [have discomfort] after eating."
The doctor also added that permanent damage from Spanx is pretty unlikely.
So as long as you’re not prone to acid reflux, IBS, or bloating, it’s OK to wear shapewear on occasion. Like on a few red carpets during award season!
Just don't wear it all day err day, you know??
