Here we go AGAIN!
We have been over this multiple times, but people still don't get it.
Heidi Klum is the latest person to make the mistake of appropriating Native American cultures in the name of fashion by having the models on Germany's Next Top Model have an "Indian-themed" photo shoot.
The models are depicted in a desert-like setting that includes teepees while wearing ceremonial headdresses, or war bonnets, and riding horses, with their faces painted in a stereotypical Native American fashion.
As usual, most of the models are white, and none of them are Native American.
The pictures were posted about two weeks ago, but the backlash has been brewing since then and getting stronger every day as more people have become aware of the images.
So far, nobody from Heidi's team or even Heidi herself have acknowledged the controversy, and the photos are still up on the German supermodel's Facebook account.
Some people have noted that Germans have had a long-standing fascination with Native American cultures. You can read more about it HERE! It's pretty interesting!
And this fascination with all things Native may explain why Heidi chose to incorporate this type of photo shoot into the show, although we don't think it excuses it.
At this point, there's really no reason why cultural appropriation should continue to take place, especially since Native people have raised qualms about it again and again.
It's high time to start listening to them.
