EXCLUSIVE! Think You Could Be America's Next Top Model? Miss J Reveals Tips For Success & The Supermodel You Should Be Looking Up To!
If anybody knows how to break a model into the business, it's America's Next Top Model judge extraordinaire J. Alexander!
And Miss J gave allll sorts of useful advice for aspiring models out there when we nabbed an EXCLUSIVE interview with the industry pro.
But not only did he dish out tips and tricks of the trade, he also told us which models he thinks are doing particularly well right now!
"Number one, no castings after working hours, alone, for the young girls, unless you're planning on doing some other kind of modeling, girl! I always suggest that if someone stops you on the streets and says, 'I think you're beautiful, here's my card,' take a parent with you, take a posse in.
Number two, you don't have to spend thousands and thousands of dollars on pictures and model open call things. I don't think you need to spend thousands of dollars in order to have someone tell you that you don't have what it takes.
Number three, you can't go in there with a weak mind. You need to go in strong, because remember you're in a beauty business — with or without an agent. It's a business where people break you down because you're beautiful. They have the power to make you look great and they also have the power to make you look un-great.
You need to be strong and know that sometimes, it's okay to take what we would call an ugly picture, when actually, it's a beautiful picture. You deliver, you give it your all, and everyone's not going to like you. I don't care how beautiful you are."
Soak that wisdom up, ladies and gents!! Memorize it if you must!
As for who is on top of the modeling world right now, two words: Karlie Kloss.
From J. Alexander himself:
"Karlie Kloss. She's a glamazon, she hits that runway. She commands it and she is modeling until you don't see her anymore. That's what I love about her. Some girls, you see them on the runway and just as they get toward the back you see them stop and start running to the backstage. This girl is so intense and I love her. She's absolutely fabulous.
And you know what, I’m kind of a fan of one of the little Kardashian sisters! I love me some Kendall. When I saw her modeling in The Heart Truth's Red Dress Fashion Show, I thought it was genius. She hit that runway with such a nervous confidence, but it was a good one. It did not take her focus away and I’m happy for her.
My other favorite, because I don't have just one, is Pat Cleveland's daughter, Anna Cleveland, who is just a reincarnation of her mother. And her mother, Pat Cleveland, was just one of the showstoppers back in the ‘70s, early ‘80s and the DNA has rubbed off on her daughter! I saw her do couture — she did some shows, including Chanel this couture season, and I thought she was brilliant.
I think right now, we need that little extra something on the catwalk, because the girls are now all walking almost the same, get down, get off, and that's it. We need some personalities now, back on the catwalk, a little bit. It's time for some girls to go out there and make some mistakes on the catwalk and bring some clothing alive! That's what is needed right now.
We're in very depressing times with what's going on around the world and people just want to be contained with some interesting visuals. I think some models can give some of that."
Love the idea of models becoming more than just a line of pretty faces!
Looks simply aren't enough anymore — in this day and age, it pays to have an unforgettable personality as well.
Think you have what it takes???
P.S. Be sure to catch Miss J's return to ANTM in Cycle 21! The new season premieres on The CW on August 18th at 9pm.
