Guess what? Those supplements you take every day don’t have to be approved by the FDA, which means that they could potentially contain harmful chemicals.
The FDA has announced that some manufacturers are deceptively labeling products to hide dangerous chemicals.
"These tainted products can cause serious adverse effects, including strokes, organ failure, and death," said FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg. "The manufacturers selling these tainted products are operating outside the law."
The FDA has pressured companies to recall nearly 200 products since 2007, including 80 that were marketed as body building supplements.
Because dietary supplements fall through a loop-hole in health regulation, the FDA can’t check them in the same way they check other medications, but many are hoping for a shift in priorities that will allow the FDA to make sure that companies aren’t harming consumers.
