A recent study of Brazil, Mexico, and the US found that 50% of men ages 18-70 have genital infection with human papillomavirus (HPV). HPV causes cervical cancer in women, and warts and cancer of the genitals in both men and women.
While this statistic is alarming, there’s still hope. Around 90% of men and women with HPV are able to fight it off on their own within two years. Also, only about 6% of men have HPV 16, the strain linked to more than 90% of cancers of the head and neck.
HPV is widespread across all people, but it's especially dangerous if you are a woman, as it can lead to cancer. There is, however, a vaccination available that is highly recommended for women. If you're a man, make sure to get tested regularly and act responsibly.
