The nation’s first facial transplant recipient made his first public debut today and says that he will be returning home to Texas to be with his young daughter.
David Wiens lost most of his face when he had an accident with a high-voltage wire in 2008. Two months ago, he underwent a 15-hour procedure to replace his face with a transplant.
Wiens recounted the most rewarding moment since the surgery — talking with his daughter: "She was amazed. She actually said, 'Daddy, you're so handsome,'"
The surgery actually brought back Wiens sense of smell. He says that the first thing he smelled was the hospital lasagna, and that it smelled delicious.
We looooove this story! So inspiring!
