Famed NYC Restaurant Closes Doors After Owners Death

Elaine Kaufman restaurant closes

A sad day for food lovers in Manhattan.

Elaine's, a famed Upper East Side restaurant, will close its doors forever on May 26 just months after owner Elaine Kaufman passed away in December due to hypertension and emphysema.

The restaurant regularly welcomed A-list celebrities, syndicated columnists, artists, and up-and-coming writers. Some of it's most successful regulars were Kurt Vonnegut, George Plimpton, Norman Mailer and Gay Talese.

Diane Becker, Elaine’s longtime manager, inherited the restaurant after Kaufman's death, but admits "there is no Elaine's without Elaine".

So sad!
