Katie Lee Writes A Novel

Somewhere in between hosting the first season of Top Chef, contributing to CBS’ The Early Show and getting divorced from her ex-husband Billy Joel, Katie Lee found the time to write a novel, Groundswell.

She talked about the fact and fiction in the novel, being married to Billy Joel, and her fav summer dish in a recent interview.

Your novel is about a young woman fresh from a divorce from a superstar actor, looking for her next chapter in life. You're young and divorced from singer/songwriter Billy Joel. How autobiographical is this?
“Like any author, I take inspiration from my own life. Is it me? No. Is it fiction? Yes. Did I take elements from my own life? Of course. But it's totally fiction.”

You have great details in here about the life of the rich and famous. You pulled stuff from your former life?
“I've been exposed to a level of glitz and glamour that I would have never even known existed. To be able to draw off of that and make it realistic, that was great.”

You call Billy Joel "the best ex-husband a girl would ever ask for." Do you see each other often?
“We do. We're very good friends. I love him very much and always will. We're in the small percentage of marriages that ended happily.”

Will certain people see themselves in this book?
“Most of the characters are elements of people I know, or know of. If people are really looking they might see something.”

Your press says the book is about "how losing everything you thought you wanted can be the first step to finding what you need." Good quote. Is that your mantra now?
“I think anyone who has been through something that is difficult can identify with that. It's whenever you think you want something, or you lose something, there's a reason, and you have to accept it to take the next step forward.”

A blurb on the back of your novel calls it an "excellent beach read." How do you feel about that?
“It's fine with me! I hope I walk down the beach this summer and see people reading my book.”

One last thing. Want to share a perfect summer dish with us?
“Yes! I really got into Mexican food when I was down there researching the book. Fish tacos. I love fish tacos. Keep it light and grill them. Then customize them. Nothing better than guacamole and ice-cold margaritas.”
