On Hawaii Five-0, Alex O'Loughlin plays one tough cop, but truth be told he's one tough actor!
At just 10-years-old Australian thespian reached his brown belt in Shobukai karate. In his 20's he was 200 pounds could bench 240. Now 34, he's dropped down to a lean, yet muscular 175 pounds and admits looking "huge" is "a young man's thing."
Instead, the slim and tan actor has picked up a new passion while filming his hit show in Hawaii — surfing.
He hasn't completely lost sight of his past and enjoys surfing with his co-star Scott Caan as much as he does sparring, saying:
“I’ll never be as good as him. And I’ll never match his jiu-jitsu, either. But if we’re in a ring together—fists and stand-up fighting—I’d lick him standing up.”
O'Loughlin says he began to transform his body into what we drool over today when he played Jennifer Lopez's baby daddy in The Back-Up Plan. Like many actors who need to get ripped quick, Alex turned to a trainer who changed his life after putting him on a nutrition plan.
Now eating a balanced combo of protein, veggies, and carbs for lunch and dinner, he knows most of his body's physical transformation happened in the kitchen, not in the gym. Sharing simple paradigm for portion control, he says:
"If you look at your open hand, the size of your palm is the amount of protein you should take—about two-thirds of a chicken breast. Your splayed four fingers equal the amount of space you should have for vegetables. And the triangular area between your index finger and thumb is for carbohydrates—brown rice or whole-meal pasta. The key is to have a very low-sodium diet and understand that 80% of [the process] happens in the kitchen, not in the gym.”
As for the 20% that DOES happen in the gym, Alex credits circuit training for his amazing body, explaining:
“I like to circuit train. If you do one exercise after another without breaking, you bump your metabolic rate up to such a place that you create what’s called a ‘furnace effect’—your metabolism is firing at such a high rate that you can go to sleep and you’ll burn calories through the night. That’s my ideal place to be.”
And our ideal place to be is right next to that sizzlin' HAWT bod at night! LOLz! Guess we'll just have to settle for season two of Hawaii Five-0 though.
