New HIV Infections Have Plateaued For Now

HIV Holding Steady

Regardless of the fact that the number of new HIV infections has been holding steady for a few years, it doesn't make it entirely a good thing.

The only thing that can be seen as good about it is that it isn't a larger number — but 50,000 a year is a large enough sum.

The latest CDC report used the new methods to look at trends over four years, and found that there were about 50,000 new infections each year from 2006-2009.

Gay and bisexual men account for the majority of the new cases – nearly two-thirds in 2009. The only increase over the four years was in young gay and bisexual men, driven by a 48 percent increase among blacks ages 13 to 29.

There are about 1.1 million people living with the disease in the US right now. That's a sad fact, and we hope there can be something done about it soon. Holding steady is one thing, but seeing it decrease is another!
