Look at those waves! Looks like so much fun!
16-year-old Lakey Peterson won the U.S. Open Junior Women's Surfing Championship in Huntington Beach on Saturday with runs of 8.5 and 7.57.
Competing in front of a huge crowd cheering her on, Lakey said:
"I was looking at that trophy before the heat, and I wanted it so bad. don't know — getting carried up through that [crowd] is a feeling most people don't get in their lifetime. It's been a good day."
She later competed and finished as the runner-up in the Women's Pro Division on Sunday. She said:
"I’m stoked with the way this week has turned out. It was an honor to surf against Sally (Fitzgibbons) and I’m really happy to make the Final in my first World Tour event."
What a great week for such a young woman! And she already has such a great career! Congrats on your win, Lakey!
