61-Year-Old Swimmer Begins Non-Stop Swim From Cuba To Florida

It has begun!

61-year-old Diana Nyad took the first stroke of her 103-mile swim between Cuba and Florida on Sunday night at 7:45pm.

The world-class swimmer, who was the first to swim around Manhattan island and ALREADY swam the longest swim in history, has been training for the 60 hour swim for the past two years.

She failed to make the trip in the summer of 1978 because of nasty weather, but is trying again to prove "the 60s are the new 40s" and hopes to inspire others, saying:

"When I walk up on those shores of Florida, I want to prove to the AARP crowd that it's not too late to go back and write that book or adopt that child."

We're not even in our 40s yet and we're inspired, so we're sure anyone with an AARP card may rethink their capabilities.

Good luck in the water, Diana! We can't wait to see you reach the shores of Florida!

Check out the video above for more details on Diana's record-setting attempt at an open-water swim without a shark cage!
