This week, FitPerez reader wants to know about the importance of proper post workout nutrition, asking:
"My question isn’t really too much about fitness, but a little more about nutrition. Post workout nutrition to be exact. I’ve heard that after you workout you should eat something right away? Is this true? If so, why is it?"
According to Mike:
"It is most definitely true. Post workout nutrition is extremely important to working out and seeing results. Whether you are strength training or doing cardio, protein and carbohydrates are being used to fuel your body. By the time you are done training, you’re protein and carbohydrate stores have been depleted and you’re muscle tissue has been damaged. To replenish your muscle tissues and promote recovery, you need to consume protein and carbohydrates after your workout.
Protein shakes are great as long as it has a good amount of carbohydrates as well (e.g., protein shake with banana). To promote the best recovery, you should be taking in 1 gram of protein for every 2 grams of carbohydrates. You don’t have to rely solely on protein shakes though; you can have whole foods too. However, liquid meals are more easily and quickly absorbed by the body and have been shown to promote faster recovery. Now, here is what is important: you only have a 1-hour window of opportunity to take full advantage of nutrient absorption to promote full recovery. So it is essential that after you workout you consume a protein and carbohydrate mix as quickly as possible."
