Study Shows Weight Training Helps Smokers Quit!

If you're trying to quit smoking, start hitting the weight room at your gym!

A new study from the Miriam Hospital in Rhode Island has found that pumping iron made men and women attempting to quit smoke TWICE as successful!

Researchers enlisted 25 male and female smokers between the ages of 18 and 65, all smoking at least 5 cigarettes a day, to participate in the study.

They were randomly placed into two groups: One engaging in two 60-minute training sessions per week for 12 weeks, while the other only watched a brief health and wellness video twice a week.

16% of smokers in the resistance training group not only quit smoking at the end of the 12 week period, but also decreased their body weight and body fat.

8% of individuals that only watched the video had quit smoking, but saw an INCREASE in their body weight and fat.

Researchers say more studies will be needed to validate the promising findings, but it sounds like weight training can only benefit people trying to quit smoking.

It also appears to encourage those who quit to ditch the nasty habit for good. Three months after the study, 15% of those in the resistance training group had managed not to lapse either.
