Marriage Helps Patients Survive After Heart Surgery

Just like milk is good for your bones, a lifetime of love does wonder for your heart!

New research has found that married heart patients that underwent coronary artery bypass surgery were more than TWICE as likely to survive for 15 years, compared with unmarried patients.

Also, the happier the marriage, the more likely they were to live longer!

After following 225 bypass patients of both genders who had surgery between 1987 and 1990, the University of Rochester came up with these statistics:

"Fully 83% of men and women who said they had happy marriages were alive 15 years later, compared with 27% of women and 36% of men who were single. But among the unhappily married, only 29% of women had survived, compared with 60% of men."

The study couldn't explain WHY marriages are helpful for long-term survival after heart surgery, but researchers theorize spouses encourage each other to make healthy lifestyle choices. A happier relationship may also give partners more motivation to, well, not want to die! Ha!
