Our favorite season of the year is ending and that means our least favorite, common cold season, is on the horizon! Yuck!
While there are hundreds of medications available to help fight off a stuffy nose or sore throat, the most effective is PREVENTION!
This week, a reader hoping to boost their immune system by eating healthy snacks wrote FitPerez correspondent and certified nutritional therapy practitioner, Margaux J. Rathbun, for help!
I love your website and your positive approach to eating healthy! Thank you for all that you do. I want to keep my immune system strong this year but I am always on-the-go and don't have time to cook meals ever day. What are some good snacks that will help boost my immune system? Thanks in advance."
Great question! There are many different foods out there that help boost immunity that include sweet potatoes, kale, Swiss chard, shiitake mushrooms, and broccoli. If you are busy and always on-the-go, it's hard to always incorporate these foods into your diet. Fortunately, there are some foods that you can take with you wherever you go.
Nuts make a great snack! My favorite immune boosting nuts are walnuts (full of B vitamins, selenium, and zinc) and Brazil Nuts (Vitamins B1, E, calcium, selenium, and zinc). Blueberries and raspberries are packed with immune boosting nutrients and can easily travel with you in a small container or bag. Of course, oranges are excellent because they are filled with vitamin C and potassium.
If you carry a bottle of water around with you, squeeze some fresh lemon juice into it. This will give you an extra boost of vitamin C. You can also try adding some chia seeds to your water! It sounds bizarre, but they are loaded with antioxidants that will help you stay healthy (and they are fun to eat). You can find chia seeds at health food stores like Whole Foods or by ordering them online (there is a link on my website for my favorite brand). If you are a coffee drinker, try swapping out that cup-of-Joe for green tea which is full of antioxidants and other beneficial nutrients.
