Study Finds High Blood Pressure Increases Risk Of Cancer

Blood Pressure

The largest study to date investigating the association between high blood pressure and cancer has turned up another reason to avoid high blood pressure in the first place!

After reviewing health information of 289,454 men and 288,345 women for 12 years, Swedish researchers found those with high blood pressure had a higher risk of developing or dying from cancer!

Men with high blood pressure had between a 10% and 20% increased risk of developing cancer. Similarly, men with the highest blood pressure compared to those with the lowest were 49% more likely to die from bowel cancer, lung cancer, kidney cancer and skin cancer.

The correlation between high blood pressure and cancer was lower in women, but still had an impact. 24% of ladies with the highest were more likely to pass away from cancer compared to the ladies with the lowest blood pressures.

Those behind the study were careful to note that it did not prove high blood pressure itself caused cancer, but instead maintained:

"These results are important from a public health perspective since a large proportion of the population in many western countries suffers from hypertension."

Overall, scientists say having higher blood pressure raised the absolute risk of cancer by "rather modest" degrees. Men with the highest blood pressures had a risk of developing cancer that was only three percentage points higher than those with the lowest.
