Michelle Obama sure knows how to lead by example!
While her husband, Barack Obama, is dealing with the economic crisis, Michelle is taking on America's obesity. She has been busy encouraging families all across the country to put down the junk food and pick up some REAL food!
To further her cause, the First Lady is releasing her first book in April called American Grown: How the White House Kitchen Garden Inspires Families, Schools and Communities.
She was inspired to write the book after receiving letters from children wanting to know about the garden at the White House, explaining:
"We’ve heard so many great stories from kids who’ve been inspired and doing things like changing the way their families do things.”
Her inspiration to change America's diet didn't come from any political advisors either. It came from her own family's heart and experience.
The Obama's got rid of sweets, processed foods and juice boxes after their pediatrician became concerned with their daughters' Body Mass Index (BMI). While such a dietary shift is inconceivable to some, Michelle proved it's not that hard, saying:
“It was really we just substituted real food for processed food. That was really the major difference. So grape juice was actually juice from a grape, which was pretty cool."
What's even cooler? The first time author is donating ALL of the book's after-tax proceeds from the book to charity!
