Food Can Be Just As Addictive As Drugs Like Cocaine

Science may have finally figured out why it's so hard to give up unhealthy food — because it's addictive!

New data is suggesting that there really are food addicts and it's not that hard to become one. Researchers believe sugary and fatty food can hijack our brain in ways that resemble addictions to cocaine, nicotine and other drugs.

This belief is even supported by the director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, who said:

“The data is so overwhelming the field has to accept it. We are finding tremendous overlap between drugs in the brain and food in the brain.”

For example, brain scans of obese people have revealed brain reward circuits similar to those experienced by drug abusers. Lab tests have found that sugary and fatty foods cause addictive behavior in animals. 28 scientific papers on this subject have been published this year ALONE with relatable findings!

It sounds like there is a lot of proof that food can be just as addictive as cocaine, but does that mean it should be just as illegal?

Roll your eyes now, but remember, there was a point in time when America thought there was no danger in smoking cigarettes. Kelly Brownell, director of Yale University’s Rudd Center for Food Policy & Obesity, believes continued research on addictive food "could change the legal landscape" and continues:

“People knew for a long time cigarettes were killing people, but it was only later they learned about nicotine and the intentional manipulation of it.”

As for the food industry peeps who may be intentionally manipulating salty and sugary snack food to increase sales, one said:

"I have never heard of anyone robbing a bank to get money to buy a candy bar or ice cream or pop.”

We don't think people specifically rob banks to spend a couple hundred grand on cigarettes either.

In fact, we don't think any super villain ever demanded $100 billion for the sole purpose of investing it into self-harming drugs or 100 billion McDoubles.

Anyway, we're getting off point. Although it seems there is a growing body of research to support claims that food can become as addictive as any hard drug, we sincerely hope the food industry isn't taking advantage of that.

At the same time, we don't want birthday cakes to become illegal because you can die from eating too many of them. We just want people to learn how to make healthier choices by educating them about the benefits of eating a balanced diet.
