Chantix suicide risk

Quitting cigarettes? You may want to consider avoiding Chantix!

A new report says the popular drug used to quit smoking may actually increase the risk of suicide and suicidal thoughts!

Researchers compared more than 3,000 reports of risks that arose from using anti-smoking drugs and found more than 90% of the reports were associated with Chantix use!

Dr. Curt Furberg, a study author and professor of public health sciences, said:

"We compared people who took nicotine replacement therapy, Zyban and Chantix. There was an increase in suicides even with nicotine replacement therapies, but Chantix was 8-10 times worse."

It's not just suicide either. Furberg and his associates found in an earlier study that Chantix users had a 72% increased risk of serious cardiovascular events.

Despite the alarming findings, the FDA still recommends the drug to be safe, saying:

"We continue to believe that when used as directed in the currently approved labeling, Chantix is a safe and effective treatment to help patients stop smoking."

Furberg and his co-authors are calling on the FDA to change warning labels on the possibly dangerous drug, but in the meantime, suggests only using Chantix as a "last resort".
