Biggest Loser Doesn't Help People Stop Discriminating Against Overweight People

Biggest Loser Backfire

You'd think a show about weight loss and personal triumph would help those who are thin respect the journey that overweight people have to go through.

But, it's actually having the opposite effect.

When thinner people watch the struggle and success of people on the show, it actually gives them a sense that weight is entirely in a person's control, and that everyone has that ability to just change.

“The real reality is that significant, sustainable weight loss is not achievable for most people. We know that the most that we can really expect people to lose and keep off over time from conventional weight loss programs is about 10% of body weight. Of course, some people lose more than that, but the vast majority regains that weight within one to five years. We also see this happening on the show — when people leave the show, many regain the weight back."

We can definitely see why this happens.

Everything is showed edited, so it also seems like they're losing the weight in a short amount of time, and very few segments deal with the span of time and how these people have to leave their lives behind to go at it full force — which is a luxury most people don't have.

We do hope the show is inspiring to overweight people, though!
