They're number 1! They're number 1!
Novak Djokovic clinched his third Australian Open title over the weekend after defeating Rafael Nadal 5-7, 6-4, 6-2, 6-7 (5), 7-5, in the longest ever Grand Slam final!
He remains the number 1 men's player in the world and after the 5 hour and 53 minute match, he's the fifth man to win three straight majors in the Open Era. Although he ripped his shirt off at the end of the match for a primal celebration, he spoke very highly of his tough opponent, saying:
"It was obvious on the court for everybody who has watched the match that both of us, physically, we took the last drop of energy that we had from our bodies. We made history tonight and unfortunately there couldn't be two winners."
The Australian Open women's final on Saturday wasn't record breaking, but Victoria Azarenka beat Maria Sharapova in 1 hour and 22 minutes to claim her first Grand Slam title and the number 1 women's ranking in the world.
Congrats, guys and gals!
