Susan G. Komen For The Cure Cuts Funding To Planned Parenthood Over Abortion

What does abortion have to do with free breast cancer screenings? Absolutely nothing, other than the fact that the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation, one of Planned Parenthood's largest donators, doesn't like it.

Komen is citing policy change as the official reason for cutting off funding that has already supported 170,000 of the breast exams and 6,400 mammogram referrals Planned Parenthood made in the last 5 years. The national breast cancer awareness group has reportedly adopted criteria that forbids it from funding any organization under government investigation.

Since the organization dedicated to women's health (which includes a woman's choice to have an abortion) is under investigation by Congress (thanks to pressure from pro-life groups), it is apparently dead to Susan G. Komen.

If you think the organization's decision to eliminate life-saving grants is based solely on policey, check this out. Karen Handel, the Foundation's Senior Vice President for Public Policy, once wrote while campaigning to be the governor of Georgia in 2010:

"I will be a pro-life governor who will work tirelessly to promote a culture of life in Georgia…. I believe that each and every unborn child has inherent dignity, that every abortion is a tragedy, and that government has a role, along with the faith community, in encouraging women to choose life in even the most difficult of circumstances…. since I am pro-life, I do not support the mission of Planned Parenthood."

She joined the Susan G. Komen last spring and, clearly, she has developed a dramatic influence.

Sue Dunlap, chief executive of Planned Parenthood Los Angeles, admits she wasn't blindsided by Komen's decision, saying:

"We had the sense this was coming and that they were under pressure. I find this really disappointing. I think when women's health is more of a political conversation than a conversation about healthcare and taking care of people, then we've gone too far."

Now there is some LOGIC we can agree with!

We're sorry if you don't agree with a woman's choice to have an abortion, but Planned Parenthood does A LOT more than that! We are very, very saddened to think of all of the lives that could have been saved if Susan G. Komen didn't let politics get in the way of their mission to prevent and treat breast cancer.
