Coffee may provide the caffeine you need to wake up in the morning, but did U know tea may provide that PLUS other healthy benefits for your body like antioxidants?
A FitPerez reader is considering giving up coffee beans for tea leaves and wrote Margaux J. Rathbun for advice, asking:
"Hi Margaux! I am a big coffee drinker but I am thinking about switching to tea. I have heard a lot about it's health benefits. What is the best type of tea to drink and how can it help to improve my health? Thank you!"
According to Margaux:
I am such a tea lover and self-proclaimed tea-a-holic! I start every morning off with a large hot mug of green tea. I love green tea because it is rich in antioxidants. It’s also been known to lower LDL cholesterol, prevent tooth decay, and prevent damage to our DNA. I recommend drinking Green Tea Goji Berry and Green Tea Lemon Ginger and from Yogi Tea.
White tea also contains a lot of powerful antioxidants and it has been shown to promote dental health, aid in the aging process, and relieve the symptoms associated with arthritis. It has a very light and naturally sweet taste, so I like to add a splash of lemon juice to white tea. This gives it an added boost of vitamin C. Try Teavana's Silver Needle White Tea and Snow Geisha White tea for a tasty and nutritious tea treat. Rooibos is another great tea that is naturally caffeine-free and delicious either iced or hot! It contains many nutrients including calcium for strong bones and manganese for healthy nerve function. Try Ginseng Vitality Rooibos tea from Teavana.
My favorite tea is yerba mate because it gives you a nice lift of energy without the "jitters". Yerba mate contains B vitamins, iron, selenium, vitamin C, zinc and potassium. In addition to these healthy nutrients, yerba mate has been shown to stimulate focus and clarity, making it a great tea to sip while you are at work. My favorite brand of yerba mate comes from a company called Eco Teas Organic and Fair Trade. It's delicious, nutritious and full of flavor! Stock up on some healthy tea today!
