After charging more than 1,400 people in 500 cases of healthcare fraud, the government has recovered an unprecedented $4.1 billion!
Some of the schemes responsible for ripping people off included illegal marketing of medical devices and pharmaceuticals for purposes not approved by the Food and Drug Administration, Medicare fraud by hospitals and other institutional providers, illegal pricing by makers of drugs, and violations of laws against self-referrals and kickbacks.
Medicare Fraud Strike Force teams were charged with task of investigating "hot spots" of unexplained Medicare billing and, according to Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, they have paid off.
"Over the last three years, for every dollar we've spent, we've put more than seven dollars back in the hands of American taxpayers," she said.
People are usually complaining about "The Man", but this is definitely one occasion on which we can all wholeheartedly say, "Thank you, Man."
