This is terrifying!
Antibiotic resistance could be brining about the end of modern medicine!
This means that as bacteria evolve to evade antibiotics, common infections could kill you. Basically.
Here's what the docs are saying:
“We are losing our first-line antimicrobials. Replacement treatments are more costly, more toxic, need much longer durations of treatment, and may require treatment in intensive care units. Some experts say we are moving back to the pre-antibiotic era. No. This will be a post-antibiotic era. In terms of new replacement antibiotics, the pipeline is virtually dry. A post-antibiotic era means, in effect, an end to modern medicine as we know it. Things as common as strep throat or a child’s scratched knee could once again kill.”
This is horrifying.
But to us, it means one thing: let's get those Nanobots up and running.
Sure they might enslave us some day and become our robotic overlords, but hey, they could do some good for a while! Ha!
In all seriousness, a lot of this is because major pharmaceutical companies are not in it to help people, but in it to make money. Where pumping money into a cholesterol drug means people could be taking it for the rest of their lives, people take antibiotics in short bursts.
It's not profitable.
Greed will kill us all, guys!
