Holy smokes! That's a BIG jump!
More and more kids are being diagnosed with autism these days. In fact, rates in the United States have risen 78% in the last decade!
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention actually estimates that 1 in 88 children have a form of autism spectrum disorder, which is partly due to an increase in early detection. Experts aren't so sure about the increase in the other 50% of the cases, however.
Either way, the numbers reveal that the neurodevelopment disorder is becoming an epidemic! Despite the alarming increase, CDC Director Dr. Thomas Frieden is looking at the bright side by saying:
"We know more about autism today than we have ever known, but there is still so much we don't know and wish that we knew."
The more we know about autism, the more we understand how to treat children with it and prevent others from developing it.
