The New Mexico Department of Health has advised against parents buying baby chicks and ducklings to give as a gift to their children.
They have the risk of carrying Salmonella and 15 cases of Salmonella have been recorded in the past four years in New Mexico because of baby chicks.
Most of these cases were in young children.
The dangerous thing (other than the Salmonella itself) is that the chicks can be carrying the sickness without actually appearing sick so little kids can hug and kiss them without knowing they're sucking bacteria into their faces.
Salmonella can cause abdominal cramps, diarrhea, vomiting, and fever.
Even just serious diarrhea can be life threatening in a young child.
So even though they're super cute, you should just stick with marshmallow peeps for your cuteness fix!
