How To Handle Close Ones Who Smoke!

Quitting smoking is an amazing triumph, because it is not small task!

It DOES get easier, but if you're fresh off the quit, it's hard to be around those who still smoke. Especially if they're loved ones.

So how do you handle that?

That's exactly what this FitPerezcious Reader needs to know:

Recently quit smoking - however some of my friends and family are smokers. What should I do when I’m with them? Is it best to avoid triggers? Or battle through?

Luckily we have Craig Nabat, our resident smoking expert on hand!

Here's what he said:

This can be a real challenge in the early stages of quitting smoking. During the first 7-10 days it is always best to keep yourself away from other smokers as much as possible. One of the initial steps to conquering an addiction is to remove the addictive substance from your easy access…You've decided to quit smoking, immediately throw out all cigarettes, lighters, and ashtrays. Also, commit to looking away for that first week, when you see someone smoking or even a package of cigarettes.

A good metaphor to think about is if you are trying to get over a terrible heartbreak, how do you help make it easier on yourself? Easy, begin to remove all visible remnants of your former love interest. Pictures are removed, phone number deleted, no longer go where they go, Facebook connection goes bye-bye. Do the same thing in regard to smoking.

It is an unconscious and unfortunate circumstance that smokers directly have influence over people trying to quit. Your core group of friends and family members who are still smoking may actually feel more comfortable being around you, when you are not trying to quit smoking. These smokers may feel embarrassment that their smoking behavior is not 100% acceptable. If you smoke with them, it makes them feel more accepted. It is so important to build up an impermeable wall of internal commitment to stay quit prior to entering social scenarios where smokers will be.

Whether something good happens or something bad happens, your new way of thinking must be plain and simple, that you no longer smoke.

Fab advice as usual, Craig! Thanks so much!
