Naloxone: Drug-Overdose Antidote

This is a very hard topic to write about, because we can clearly see both sides of the argument here.

Naloxone, which is basically thought of as a drug-overdose antidote, has been put into the hands of the common public — specifically those who suffer from addiction.

On one hand, we have something that can counteract the overdose of heroin, OxyContin and other powerful painkillers that has been routinely used by ambulance crews and emergency rooms in the U.S. for decades… and a way for a family member to save another. On the other, we have something that could be giving a false sense of security to those who should be overcoming addiction instead of continuing on their ways without worry.

A lot of people liken it to giving out clean needles during the AIDs boom.

Whatever your view, it's pretty astonishing at all that it works. It blocks the drug receptors of the brain, but it has no effect on alcohol OR cocaine.

Normally available only by prescription, it's now being issued to people through 50 programs in more than 188 locations around the country. Those locations include Baltimore, New York and San Francisco. Apparently such giveaways may have saved more than 10,000 lives since the first program was started in 1996 in Chicago!

You can also find it in Britain, the Ukraine, Russia and Kazakhstan.

Do U think it's a good idea to give it directly to the addicts, or should that money be spent on getting people off drugs and into recovery and treatment??
