There is a pill that could help healthy people avoid contracting HIV… but the question is: would you take it every day if it wasn't guaranteed?
Truvada is the drug, and Feds gave the nod to study results that it could help healthy people avoid HIV in the first place. Truvada has been around for a while as an HIV fighting pill, but until recently was only used after the contraction!
Here's what happened:
'A three-year study found that daily doses cut the risk of infection in healthy gay and bisexual men by 44 percent, when accompanied by condoms and counseling. Another study found that Truvada reduced infection by 75 percent in heterosexual couples in which one partner was HIV infected and the other was not.'
On Tuesday, the FDA is meeting to discuss an approval on the pill. That positive nod it got is really telling that it has a great chance of becoming the first drug approved for the prevention of HIV in high-risk patients!!
This is incredible!
The thing is this, though — if you don't take it EVERY DAY, it probably won't work.
So would U have the self discipline to do so, if that prevention never really hits 100%??
Either way this is an incredible step!
